I'd like to recommend Ghostery for you Windows users. I recently returned to Windows 7 from Linux after 9 yrs.
Ghostery is a Firefox add-on. It allows you to block any site that wants to collect statistics for sellers and advertisers.
As each new web site is accessed Ghostery puts up a small window in the upper right part of the screen showing "new" unblocked sites. Above the taskbar a "ghost" avatar will appear showing a message Blocked:3 of 3. Some sites might assault you with 8 or more collectors. After a while there will be fewer and fewer collectors.
My browsing is much cleaner and more secure. OPSEC is important to me but freely giving out my browsing habits to the world is just stupid.
Ghostery may work for other browsers but you'll have to go check........
