Fresh Water fish can be Heavy Metal contaminated, just like Saltwater fish, if they live in polluted water. There were a number of rivers in Maine that were polluted with Heavy Metals, from Paper Mills, in the past. Most of these have been cleaned up, these days. You just have to know what is Upstream from where you are fishing. ..... YMMV.....

Our Michigan Department of Natural Resources gives out a consumption guide for toxins. Blue gills are not considered dangerous but pregnant or nursing women should not eat large quantities of any fish caught in Michigan. The worst ones are carp, sucker and other bottom feeders. Bluegills feed suspended in the water so they don't injest as many toxins which tend to settle on the bottom. Salmon are the same way.

Fried in butter, and I don't care how much toxins they might carry. I'll be the happier for eating them.
