If one actually goes through the process themselves and put forward the effort, they will see it can be rewarding. As Ray Mears once said, "It's not just about lighting a fire on the ground, it's about lighting a fire within."
Nice video. I love using the knife as the thunderhead idea. I have had some success with this method. I keep my thunderhead in my pack because they are not always the easiest to find in the woods. The only downside to the knife would be if it slipped and cut you. I put my arm under my leg for more pressure on the spindle and a knife could cause some serious damage under there. Also it was very wasteful of him to just dump the whole ember and dust on the nest. I save all my extra goofers dust in a film canister. You can use it to build your ember up to last for some extra time when you really need it. Also the goofers dust can be great for embers using the fire piston method.
Our friend, Sticks is no longer available, but we hope he does come back around. Until then, here's a video by Ray Mears on this subject. ETA - @sticks65 Flagged him in case he's still on the web. -ghrit
