Often when I go camping, (which unfortunately isn't too often) I'll wrap a whole onion with a blob of butter in aluminum foil and toss it in the fire for about 30 minutes.
Delicious! Sweet.

 

Thanks for that idea on throwing an onion in the fire. We bought one of those little round cookers that I put a medium onion in with butter & beef cube.
