Oh yeah I been keeping them in my back pocket for years they even sale a leather pock sleeve that goes in your pocket for that to.
Being that your using a string , you could place the launcher across the field or directly at you as birds don't always fly away .

@Bishop It has occurred to me that using a long shank screw driver as a stop for the catapault / trebuchet arm, gives a fixed trajectory (though mass and shape of projectile may allow of some variation). you may be able to vary the trajectory by adding additional holes along the vertical axis of the timber to alter the position of the screw driver - arm stop.
