As long as no standards are sacrificed, I'm good with it, in principle. The Marine Corps floated the idea back in October of this year, by allowing two female Marine lieutenants to attend the Marine Infantry Officers' Course. Neither of the two female officers were able to complete the course, but twenty-six male lieutenants also failed to complete the course.

Reproductive Organs have nothing to do the ability to adequately fulfill a combat role; it's about body frame, strength, intelligence, endurance, and attitude. The latter category being the most important. In principle, no one should be excluded from any job, in or out of the military, because of their gender; but neither should they receive preference because of their gender. Unfortunately though, this is a larger question than one simply about gender equality. It has to do with life and death consequences.

I'm not even sure there is a perfect right or wrong answer in this issue. It is very situational dependent. It depends on the person, and on the details of the situation. Having a female fighter pilot is very different thing from a female infantry platoon leader. If a unit leader in combat doesn't have the confidence of the members of the unit; that unit will be ineffectual in combat. Perceptions are important.

So while I support gender equality in principle, I don't see this heading in a positive direction, and I don't think we will see large numbers of women in direct combat roles. Combat support - certainly, and in many combat arms MOSs - yes; but infantry - I don't think so.

I don't see many 130 lb men picking up a 220 lb guy either. I don know a few female
Firefighters that would probably be up to the challenge though. Huge amazon types. As for the monthly there are types of birth control methods that can actually stop a woman from getting her monthly while she is on it. Like I said before, if she can pass the exact same course to the same standards then go for it.

I want the best qualified to fill the job. Not the best minority, not the best of 6 different categories of lesser applicants, Not the top of the class of misfits, the best. Nothing else matters much. I don't care if you pray to the east, wear a jock strap, or love fried chicken. None of that really matters, when my house is on fire, they are in the line of fire, or I'm taking fire. [drooling] (And if she looks good while doin' it, all the better.):D

I agree with much of the comentary here in relation to women in frontline combat roles subject to their meeting the same minimum fitness standards: physical, intellectual and psychological that are applicable for men for any given MOS.

Bear in mind that women have at many times and in many places picked up the implements of killing, and have placed themselves into harms way to fight for their country and their cause. Whatever the recruitment or employment standards are at the beginning of a conflict...nations become somewhat less picky the further a conflict drags on, and the pool of "suitable" gun fodder diminishes. This happened in WWI and WWII and willl also undoubtedly happen in WWIII. Towards the end of WWII in Germany, 14 year olds and old men were drafted into the Volkssturm. Men who would otherwise have been invalided out were placed into special battalions to accomodate their special disabilities....

I could not fail to include Nancy Wake, whom I had the privilege of escorting on a couple of occasions during my military service....her biography makes for fascinating reading and her value to the French resistance was such that the Germans placed a price on her head. She did the same training as the male SOE operatives, and put her skills to practical use by killing unfortunate German soldiers (and French collaborators) that were inconveniently in her way.

The argument I always hear trotted out is the 120 pound female can't drag/take down a 250 pound man from a fire/fight blah blah blah.

I've seen more than a few little guys in the military, fire and police departments. I've also seen more than a few women who were built like linebackers, and I don't mean fat OR body builders. Not all women were born petite flowers and not all men are big strong brutes either. The argument to deny all women the chance to even try based on the fact that some are physically incapable of handling the responsibility is the same as the one that would deny us all the right to own weapons because some are mentally incapable of handling the responsibility, IMO.

And no, I have no particular interest in running all day with an 80 pound ruck, but one of my friends who is going on 8 years as a deputy now has and still can, and I'd rather her 5'11" 180 pound ass backed me up in a bar fight than her 5'10, 140 pound male partner any day.

Lay out the requirements, run 'em through the tests, and whoever can't cut it, kick 'em to the curb regardless of how they prefer to pee. If it weeds out 99% of the women who try, so be it, but don't penalize the 1% who deserve to be there.

As for the lack of a "rag", skip the sugar pills in the BC pack and voila. No need for rags. Most of us been doing that for years anyway.

I will bet you a lot of money there are are more 130# women than there are 130# men. So, based on probability laws of the bell curve, a 130# man is a rare event compared with a 130# woman. Moreover, the probability that this rare event is a soldier, firefighter, or cop is even more rare.

So, I do agree with you, but the likelihood of it happening is so small it's pointless to talk about.

Man why do you have to break my heart like that. I was getting ready to Re- up again.

Seriously though, I see good and bad in it. I have dated a couple of ladies who could take this on no problem. I have to wonder what it will look like when these soldiers start returning home ripped to pieces from combat injuries. I wonder how it will weigh with the politicians sending them into combat. What will happen when they become pregnant to get out of Combat? And the rape cases. etc.
If one gets taken POW how will it effect the negotiations, Instead of Beheading videos will start to see our Lady GI's getting gang raped ???
I'm a little old fashioned, but open minded enough to look at new things.

Does the IDF not have female soldiers in active duty. Granted, it may not be an active combat role, but are they not all required to serve.

Sure, put them in combat, make it an all female company, crew, etc. That will take care of the rapes, babies, sexual comments.

I have no desire to add even more stress within a combat group.

There, want equality, go for it, call them the Amazon Battalion, train them, let them take care of their own and that should pretty much cover most of the comments in this thread.

Wake up, the whole world is segregated.

But now that you've got that out of your system, ever seen the SMURFS in the BUDS Classes?

Open up, realize that other countries have done this in war time and it works better than one size fits all.

Once they have trained togather and learned then you use them for replacements just as is the norm. This is one way to weed out the weak.

    YMMV
