Chinese man caught flu from healthy-appearing birds

by Pete Hisey on 3/8/2006 for Meatingplace.com

The man who died in Guangdong province this week apparently contracted the H5N1 virus from chickens who exhibited no symptoms of avian influenza.

There have been no reports of the disease in the province since 2004, and health authorities said that transmission from birds carrying the disease but showing no symptoms adds a new layer of danger to the disease. They are also investigating whether vaccination of poultry might be masking the disease.
