Now that things are getting chilly - at least here - time to think about supplies for this winters warm drinks.

    First up is pinole.
The 'net - explainer of all things tells us this:
Depending on the type of pinole and the quality of its ingredients, pinole can be high in key vitamins and nutrients, including protein, amino acids, fiber, and antioxidants.
Due to the large amount of fiber and the slow digestion of the maize, pinole also has a very high satiety effect, leaving those who consume it feeling full for a longer period of time. For many indigenous peoples of Mexico and Central America, it is relied upon as a key source of nutrition and sustenance.

A premium version of pinole that is said to mimic the original Aztec variety is produced and distributed by Native State Foods, a Santa Monica-based company.
    PURELY PINOLE

I use the cheap seats version, Atole.
Sweet Milk and Corn Drink: Atole : Robert Irvine : Food Network I was shown this as a kid by an old Mexican ditch digger. Cool guy. Passed away decades ago.

With chocolate, it becomes champurrado.. This is to die for in the winter.
    Listing of all the variants.
Atole: A Mexican corn drink. Types of atole and cooking tips

When people ask just what the hell I'm drinking, - I tell them thin grits...or liquid tortillas - the reaction is funny. Please note, this drink is an acquired taste.

Play with some Red's Masa Harina -it is corn meal after all. You can even make tortillas with it. It comes in smaller bags (Red's mills) so you can decide if it is for you. If it is a winner - it can be had in 8 Kg bags. It's a good prepper / disaster Chow, add hot water (or milk) and have at it. Check your local bodega - I'm sure there is one in your neighborhood. .

I just dump the cornmeal, sugar (the natural kind in the brown wrapper) and hot water - Stir till a bit foamy. If I have access to cinnamon - or cinnamon-sugar, it goes on top.

See what works for u - the key is to whisk (or work with a fork) until lump free.

BTW - Mexican hot chocolate is available at Wallyworld
Nestle ABUELITA Authentic Mexican Hot Chocolate Drink Tablets 19 oz. Find in a Box at the Walmart ethnic food aisle.
My grandkids just love this stuff as do I. Nestle's means it is safe to buy/consume..

What do you drink n cold weather?

It's just about Apple pressing time, So it's going to be Cider and apple sauce for me! I have one hell of a mint crop almost ready for the second cutting before the winter set, so I'm going to set aside several large plants and do the crush and pulp with out the heat and press so I can make what ever drink spices later! Goes really good in just about anything, from Moijto's to spiced cider, to mulled wine! Also going to do up some hard cider and put up some root beer this season! Mexican Hot Chocolate is a staple and we have lots of it around, and the kids LOVE it, so it's highly sought after! Turkish coffee grounds are a new addition to our supplies, though we have always enjoyed it, we now keep a large stock of it, but we brew it Greek style ( Mediterranean) and it's unbeatable, kind of like espresso only better!

Any spices and such that you grow and use fresh, can be minced or pulsed in a food processor then mix with water or broth depending on future uses and froze as ice cubes which you then pop out of the molds/trays and immediately bag in ziplocs and label and toss in freezer. It is as good as fresh and can be used in drinks or soups/stews (is better than dried, and if water and hand grown costs nothing .... okay one cheap dollar store freezer bag)

Hey DKR, your in trouble now (NOT) .... I reported this post. (I asked admin/mods to transfer it to recipes so it is easier for everyone to find later) (it will pretty much disappear forever in the mass of threads of general discussion)

I figured that was a given @Bandit99 , it's one of those every one should have kind some of deals! LOL

Actually, having good liquor around is as important as anything, it's good for the soul, and can really boost moral when things get rough! It''s also pretty good for cooking and darn if it isn't tasty too!

1 can of Pepsi, 1 stick of cinnamon heat until lightly simmering, let cool slightly and add a shot or two of your favorite - Jack, Jim Beam or good stuff if you have it.

In about 30 minutes head for the sleeping bag. You won't care how cold it is. (used to do this on hunting trips).

When I was a kid we used to drink boiled beer and maple syrup.

Spend all day out playing in the snow before you try to judge this one. I haven't had any in probably 45 years, since I started liking cold beer, but to a frozen kid with bright red cheeks and cold, wet feet, it's amazing.
