Chicken shits. Just wanted to make a statement to appease the masses.
Didn't have to say they were exiting the civilian market. But it's great spin for them.

As mentioned earlier by another poster. Now the anti-gunners have more 'ammo' to pressure other manufacturers.

Wonder if they'll stop selling the internals as well … or is it just the completed firearm ? I'm betting just the completed unit. I'll pass on buying ANY of their internals .. just because.

Colt was run into the ground by the bankers, a long strike, and a boycott brought about by its agreeing with the anti gunners, smart triggers that did not pan out etc. Leadership with the ex Marine Keyes pulled them back from the brink and they started to come back, but he retired and the banker vultures are back to get what they can out of it. Hard to see a premium price for an old design assembled out of other peoples parts. Still own and love their old revolvers and the 1911 can not be beat. Will hate to see them join the ever growing number of great companies of the past.

    Point of order
the mass media IS NOT the masses. It a small, vocal and tint tiny minority that has (sadly) too much influence in the business world today.

Colt guns are over-priced and there are plenty of other gun manufacturers. With a few exceptions, a 1911 is a 1911 and an AR-15 is an AR-15. Guns are an investment that you NEVER sell...so it doesn't matter who made it!

Colt's quality hasn't matched price in decades. More of a status symbol anymore.

Overpriced products. The biggest beef with the M-16 is that it jammed easy if it got dirty. I think many more manufacturers will cave.
AR-15 are the problem, not the people wielding the inanimate object. Such is the logic we face. So many so willing to give up freedoms and liberties. it makes you wonder what has happened to people.

Unfortunately, the masses watch/listen to mass media.
The silent majority just goes along for the ride most of the time.
    And it's an echo chamber.

Maybe the ownership of AR-15,s is being debated by the folks in power. From what I see on the news and the web many people don't have a clue what the second amendment is about. Sheeple.

Found this on another site which may explain the halt for civilian production and gives a new meaning to ''Fake News''
COLT CONTINUES: Pauses Civilian AR-15 Market For Military Contracts.

The statement also explains the company has a number of high-volume military contracts and that their entire rifle production capacity is needed to fulfil these orders.
This is something which Colt has done in the past when completing large scale military contracts.
The statement follows the news that the company has been awarded a $41,924,594 firm-fixed-price contract to provide M4s to more than a dozen countries through US Department of Defense foreign military sales.
While the number of rifles to be produced is not specified the completion date is set for 18 September 2024, and depending on per rifle cost may run to between 50-70,000 rifles, not to mention earlier M4 contracts recently awarded to Colt.

Colt awarded $42 million contract to produce M4, M4A1 carbines for 13 countries contract announcement

How Colt Lost Its Big Contract To Sell the US Army Rifles

The beginning of Colt’s downfall in the modern era began around the 1980s. FN began making inroads into the US military market again around that time, as a version of their gas-operated FN MAG was adopted as a vehicle coaxial machine gun in 1977, followed by the adoption of the FN Minimi as the M249 in 1984. FN had to build manufacturing facilities in the US to produce these guns, so they started competing for contract Colt had, notably the M16 rifle.

In 1988, FN beat out Colt on a tender to produce M16A2 rifles, undercutting Colt’s bid by $57.50 per rifle. Colt’s patents on the rifle had expired in 1983. However, Colt had one last card to play. Around that time, Colt was finishing up development of the XM4 Carbine, building on a long lineage of shortened AR carbines produced since the Vietnam War. The XM4 was adopted as the M4 in 1994, and would become Colt’s primary product throughout the global war on terror. However, Colt would not innovate significantly since then, and in 2013 FN grabbed Colt’s M4 contract, which they already partially lost to Remington Defense before.
