This is a great, well written article about observing and learning from what is going on in Venezuela. I have a thread on the collapse. I hope aside from just learning the news and seeing the slow collapse and the suffer, I hope people are learning watching and preparing. One key sentence that I have read in other articles, and in this one-
Food storage is great but having knowledge and skill to grow your own is essential.

Here is the observations and tips that I found on Organic Prepper-

@Motomom34 Great article! Thanks! I still don't have enough food stored and I need to get off the dime and purchase that gas/propane generator...

If these folks must suffer so much pain the least we can do is learn from them.

I might tend to put more emphasis on water and water filters and face breathing filters as well .

Eat what you store, and store what you eat normally.
It does not hurt to include things you do not normally eat like; rice, and beans, ( done correctly these can be stored a very long time), however it is important to know how to prepare these things as well if your not accustomed to the process .
My first attempts at gardening failed miserably and I am still struggling and fighting with blight and pests, so merely buying seeds in an attempt to start gardening after things go wrong may not be a wise idea. Some seed will last a year or two or more but you cant's count on that if it gets hot .
Gardening is a very long learning curve ,to some it comes natural but not to me apparently. .
Having plenty of canned food is important in the event the garden is compromised, not just initially but long down the road.

Well, luckily I have an expert gardener that resides on the premises with me; however, her expertise turns me into nothing more than a manual laborer. Oh well. But, the benefits aren't bad as get all the homemade raspberry jam I can eat, fresh vegetables for salads, and lots of homemade Blackberry vodka (errr...which sometimes can be a bad thing).

Actually, I am taking this post to heart and going to drop some money on some more freeze-dried and go get some more 5 gallon pickle buckets from San Francisco Sourdough (or whatever they call it) for stables (rice, beans, etc.) and do a long trip to COSTCO and WINCO. I think with the garden and everything we got canned from last year and what we got stored that will definitely give us in excess easily for 6 months, actually more. Water is no problem as got 1500 gallon cistern. Ammo is okay with currently about 1600 rounds of 5.56 and the same in 9mm. So, yeah, going get this done this week or early next. I need to pick up another Glock 19 also...going with a rifle for the wife as she is more accurate with one and she handles the recoil better, probably give her my AR...

Just how far North are you!?!? I am in Northern Idaho and tomatoes are in the ground doing well, green onions, radish, lettuce and carrots are all up but not ready yet...

Geez, I always assumed Ohio was one of those places with long growing seasons with good weather for growing anything and everything. Goes to show you one should stick to the facts and leave out the assumptions...
