Dhimmitude, What does it mean?

The reality is that any and all legislation will face legal challenges by those who feel that the legislation infringes on their constitutional rights and freedoms, or if they feel that there is an abuse of legal process....that applies, whether they are muslim, christian or pastafarian...whether democrat, republican, national socialist or communist. If the challenge succeeds, it just demonstrates that the legislation is poorly drafted or relies on powers that the legislation is incapable of enforcing or improperly enforcing...whether that is a joke or not, is perhaps a matter of perspective and one's particular sense of humour. Electors of course have the option of kicking out of office the architects and proponents of unpopular legislation and laws come time for re-election.

I have not read in detail the legislation but as far as I understand it, there won't be government goons rounding up the uninsured and placing them in re-education camps. There are penalties (fines) for being uninsured, but so are there penalties for posessing guns without the appropriate licensing, or vehicle owners not having compulsory 3rd party personal insurance. Some folk will choose not to license their firearms, or not to have automobile insurance...that is their choice...but they should not complain greatly if they are penalised for exercising it.

Australia has had a universal health care scheme (Medicare) for decades now, and no person who is permanently resident in Australia need fear financial bankruptcy as a consequence of becoming ill with a life threatening (or even less than life threatening) disease or injury. Patients who have private medical insurance may have some additional health care bells and whistles that the uninsured may not enjoy...but, whether Prime Minister, or indigent street bum...nobody is denied best practice quality medical treatment if they are short of cash. Health insurance is voluntary in Australia, but there are disincentives for not taking out minimal voluntary health insurance once Australians are of an age to earn an adult income.

In the final analysis Americans will decide at the ballot box whether or not they want a universal health insurance scheme as laid out by Obama and the Democrats....or whether they want a return to the status quo, ante legislation....winners will be grinnners...and losers will have to make their own arrangements.

 

Ah well...context is everything...I would guess that anything that could not be expressed as diagrams or mathematical or geometrical calculations and formulae to an engineer would be xonsidered verbosity. A professor of philosphy may have a slightly different take on the matter, though even philosohical aguments of logic can be tested by way of concise formulae....
