    @Motomom34 Do you have the same stuff on hand that @Gopherman did when making his cob stove? I cant remember what his mixture was.

    @Moto: The EZ insulation you need...

    If you want a good cheap insulation that can be found or made around the house, I recommend good, old-fashioned wood ash. Yep, The fluffy grey stuff that comes right out of the fire pit. Minus the chunks of charcoal.

    In the same way that wood ash can protect the bottom of a stove from burnout, it should be able to decrease the heat loss from the sides of an oven, mostly by preventing convention currents in the air.

    It'll probably pack down over time. NP: just top it up as needed.

    Do keep it out of the rain though, unless you want to percolate some alkali water out the bottom and make soap.
