    There is a difference in that the IRA can hold the actual metal, not just paper. You need to be careful to retain an easily audited storage in case the IRS starts questioning things. Which is exactly why I don't and never did have solids in my accounts.

    Then this is news to me, as everything I have ever read about the self directed IRAs call out that the metals must be held by a 'trustee', and not by the actual saver.
