Tesla Model S "Will Be Faster Than A Porsche 911"

Five years after debuting the original electric 2-seat Roadster, Tesla shows customers its first all-new car: the $50,000, 7-passenger Model S.

    YahooAutos_215044. <cite class="byline vcard">By G.E. Anderson | Yahoo! Autos – <abbr title="2011-10-02T13:25:47-07:00">23 minutes ago</abbr></cite>

TESLA_065127. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, introduces customers to the Model S sedan at the company's Fremont factory …

FREMONT, Calif.— Five years after shocking the automotive world by unveiling a battery-powered Lotus Elise, Elon Musk, CEO and founder of Tesla Motors, announced that his electric car company "will build a high-performance version of the Model S that will go zero to 60 (mph) in 4.5 seconds. That's faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera."

tesladrive_075305. Click to view the Tesla Model S image gallery.

The crowd, naturally, went wild. Hundreds of deposit-paying customers had already taken quick rides around the parking lot at speeds over 70 mph when Musk drove a red pre-production Tesla Model S show car — albeit somewhat less quickly — up the ramp and onto a stage inside Tesla's U.S. factory (formerly known as NUMMI, the facility Tesla purchased from Toyota just last year and revamped for a fraction of what a new car factory normally costs to build). Production versions of the Model S will start rolling out of here in mid-2012."The oil companies said electric cars can't work, but the truth is, they don't want them to work," Musk said.
"But here it is," he continued. "They would say this car is the equivalent of a unicorn. Well, tonight you had the opportunity to ride a unicorn."

After driving the Model S onto the stage, Musk exited his seven-passenger sedan along with seven other occupants (and their luggage), three from decidedly unconventional spaces: two children climbed out of optional rear-facing bucket seats and through the rear hatch, and a surprising eighth guy popped out from beneath the hood carrying a backpack. Check out the video:

I sure hope the oil companies and the big three don't pull a Preston Tucker situation on Telsa. It is the future and it has now arrived on track 1.

The amazing thing with that 306 lb/ft of torque, is that it's at that number through the entire RPM range... electric motors are a beautiful thing :)

Seeing as the original roadster costs around $100,000, that they can bring to market a more substantial and useful vehicle at half the price, and with more range (with the extended option), is pretty amazing. The philosophy of Tesla hasn't been that of the typical auto manufacturer, producing a... More

I like how it "shocked the automotive world." There were electric powered cars in the 1980s...until GM recalled them all. Read "Who Killed the Electric Car?"

Nice job Tesla. We need more at a little less cost but all in all a great job. Tell GM, FORD and the rest how to get 160 or 220 out of a charge will ya? It would be so nice to see the greedy oil people drinking oil for breakfast. It will take some time but maybe not as much as some people may.... More

The electrical output must be pretty high to get this thing to go so fast and sustain an average speed of 60 MPH for 150 miles. No gas at all? Just batteries? Like gasoline cars stop and go uses more power/gas. is it the same with electric? or is the 160 mile range consistant with no matter how you... More

Drive it, park it and plug it in at the end of the day to "top off the tank". If it were cheaper, I'd actually consider buying one. If needed, you could even carry a small Honda generator to charge the batteries if no outlets are available.

In 6 years, when the car has 120,000 miles on it, is when you lose. The battery will only get you to the grocery store and back at that point because batteries hold less charge as they age. If you can sell it, you will have to knock off $10,000 so that the buyer can replace the battery. ... More

Yes, Electric seems like the way to go. But, I get ticked off when I see my electric bill every month as it stands now. It all sounds well and good but what will it cost the owner to charge it. If you think that electric cars will eliminate the oil companies - think again !
your car still needs lubrication, plastic is a oil product too plus you can bet that the oil companies will start silently purchasing stakes in electric car companies just like BP has stakes in solar plants
