It would seem that most of these environmentalist types are city dwellers, appear to like to dictate what everyone else should be doing. They seem to pretty much go with the flow, the only way you know they are an environmentalist is they tell you so, they used it as an excuse to buy a fancy expensive planet destroying hybrid, eat food I don't consider to be food and don't actually own any of the environment.
It appears that being an environmentalist is more of a spectator sport. Where you talk about it and how it should be done but don't actually take part in it.
If they really cared about the environment they would buy land and take care of it. I know there are some who do but they appear to be a tiny minority.
I don't know maybe I'm completely wrong, I'm open to other options?

Methinks "environmentalist" does not mean what one might think. I suspect you are right about the city dwellers adopting a label that makes them think they are doing good. As with the larger share of "do gooders" they don't. The real environmentally conscious folks are those that actually have taken on the stewardship of the planet's resources as you mention. Can you say "farmer" that does not have time to wave a flag and brag? Then you also have fishermen that recognize the need for sustainable fishery stocks.

No, I think you are correct. They always seem to exempt themselves. Taking a petroleum fueled vehicle made of petroleum based plastic to a protest wearing petroleum based synthetic clothes for example is fine, for the greater good.

I tend to agree with you. They mostly seem to be a little out of touch with their beliefs , going home from work stopping off to buy supper in suv's in a plastic bag and styrofoam plate , eating their GMO foods , spending stupid amounts of money on Starbucks coffee in the throwaway cups and cup holders , disposable diapers , boxed foods . Yea , there's a few of them that might actually try to walk the walk , but most just talk the talk. All the while looking down on us for raising chickens and rabbits for food , or hunting for food , gardening, canning , to escape big governments preservatives filled foods. Yea the list is endless. And I may be as guilty as a lot of them, I'm no saint , but I try not to judge others how they want to live , about the only ones I do find myself judging are the freeloaders and dope slingers. The rest , I don't care what you do , I just don't want their beliefs , wants or ideas forced on me.

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

When the USSR collapsed, many hard-core communists moved into the Green Revolution to continue their quest for personal power. Most (if not just "many") environmentalists today are either outright socialists, or the sheep-brained snowflake twinks that drank the socialist lemonade.

My husbands father worked at a hydroelectric plant in Ohio all the way into the 1970's and they have torn it down since. Stupidity abounds. I agree with the rest of you on the subject as well. Um I wonder how they like the cold with all their ego crap and taking down and turning off the coal fired electrical plants. It is taking more to heat the homes back east and some are having brown and black outs with the severe cold. And yeah many of us have seen this kind of cold before but there weren't any fancy names for it besides winter weather. I grew up a lot of the time in WI. Heck we even had -45 during the day in the 1960's.

I think with the OP is actually referring to are the Enviro-Nazi's VS the real enviro folk. We have both in Co, and you can tell them apart real easy. The "Real Ones" don't have to tell any one who or what they are, they just are. the Fakes have all sorts of Anti propaganda all over and around them. I grew up in the Mid Central Valley of Oregon in the 70's and 80's when the Antis showed up with their environmentalist anti logging message, and it got real ugly for quite a long time. Logging trucks burned down or sabotaged, mills burned down, loggers maimed or killed because of steel spikes in trees, whole towns invaded with the anti crowds and no one could stop it! The cry was for an little owl, that was an import from Cali, and it was "threatened" so they had their rally cry, meanwhile, the salmon fisheries, and most of the good rivers were over fished by the gill netters and the Indians, and no one complained, and there were no antis to take up the war chant to stop it!!!! Orygun is now filled to over flowing with NAZI's and it really sucks! When I was a kid, Or. was a super cool, fun state with a lot of very pro sportsman life style views and ideals, and while its always been a Dem, Liberal state, it was held in check by the more rural population that practiced good stewardship. Unfortunately, the Commy-fornicators to the south discovered the life and cheep real-estate and brought their commi socialist ways north, and they ruined it all, all in the name of their ideals which went against those of us that lived here! I have been gone for most of the last 13 years, and have been shocked and saddend by what I see today, it's been destroyed, and while not as bad as, say, Chitcago, its heading that way fast!

The animal rights lunatics are a whole nother matter.

They think hunting is crule, but think industrial farm raised meat isn't.
They have obviously never seen how live stock is raised in these large complexes.
    But let's not go there.

    Fuzzy labels/names is about it.
In Louisiana and Texas plus MOST states we in field operations in the oilfield are called production operators or pumpers
NOW if we go work in Commiefofnia the title changes to Environmental containment or control officer.
    Same job, Go figure.

  13. I live on the right bank of the Mississippi. There are twenty-six nav-dams. All were originally meant to have low head generators as well maintaining a nine foot channel. Imagine using the same water twenty-six times to generate electricity. Talk about jobs at the sites and look what industry could do with abundant energy. All the ecological damage has already been done. And a source of revenue for the government. Isn't Hydo-power one of the cleanest sources of power?

Yup, but there are a few problems. I know of three: The main difficulty is that just about all suitable sites are already in use. Second, if you can find a site unexploited, the NIMBYs will be all over you like stink on poop. Third, there are envirowhackos that are agitating for removing old dams (cheaper than rehabbing and upgrading) and it is happening. More's the pity.

Environmentalist whine about coal, gas, oil and, nuclear power plants. They also whine about hydro (hurts fish), wind (kills birds), solar mirror boiler plants (kills birds). The only thing they seem to like is solar silicon panels BUT none of them realize the amount of energy and pollution generated making those things is mind boggling. Why do you think most of the world’s solar silicon is manufactured in China where they have zero environmental regulations.

The way the panels are manufactured and some of what's used to make then are non renewables.
The best one, manufacturing monocrystaline produces radioactive waste.
Oh and how their heads explode when you tell them this. The truth sucks.

A good litmus test I have found is tell an honest person a lie to piss them off, tell the truth to a liar to piss them off.

Everyone sane is concerned with the state of the environment to some degree, so I don't even see the need for a term like "Environmentalist." Who seriously thinks that what we need to do is pump more garbage into the oceans? Yeah, fuck whales, I need more lamp oil and perfumes! I think most people in the West have been properly sensitized to this shit. We all recycle, don't we?

Beyond that is entering the limits of Crazytown. If you want to own a hybrid or a Tesla go nuts, but that doesn't give you a license (yuk yuk) to be a condescending dick to those still driving a regular car. If you want to maintain a personal garden to grow some of your own food, like I do, then great! Gone vegan? Sure, whatever, but you should be doing those things for their own merit, not to give you something to brag about and hold over others.

It's why the whole Climate Change thing is a giant distraction from a pretty convenient truth: transitioning to solar power, wind power, other forms of renewable energy, even clean coal to some degree, is what we should be doing ANYWAYS. The doomsday predictions of Al Gore are nonsense designed to frighten children, and they do a massive disservice by not just focusing on how amazing it will be to have a renewable and sustainable civilization on this planet that is also our spaceship through the Universe. Digging shit out of the ground and burning it was necessary, and we are now reaching a point where it isn't and we have better options. These options are getting cheaper and cheaper as Capitalism does its thing (and Elon Musk is a genius), and if they do it right we'll all WANT to switch away from oil and coal. We won't even have to cripple business with carbon caps and whatever.

It's the only hope for the city. City living makes people mean and crazy. But imagine a city where the outsides of all the skyscrapers are covered with vines and trees and food. Rooftop gardens on every roof being tended by children who have grown up with a real connection to their food born of their own hands. Hermetically sealed skyscrapers full of organic produce only blocks from where you live so everything is local and fresh and nothing is ever frozen or shipped except for meat, and in a few more years we'll be creating synthetic meat in a lab (for those who want it) that will taste amazing and have no cruelty associated with it so the vegans can finally fuck right off with their attitude. Solar panels are everywhere and electricity comes from the panels and wind turbines and offshore ocean turbines and hydro-electric dams and the air is clean, scrubbed clean by the very city itself. The city would be quieter too, only the whisper of electric vehicles that you plug into the wall at night like the goddamned future that it finally is and maybe then we could try being happy and free :)

As an Environmentalist, I have to say that even birds know not to shit their nests. People, on the other hand, not so much. We live in a world where water now comes in a plastic bottle, air is conditioned and freshened, GMO this Monsanto that. Simple fact is that if you gave every man, woman, and child on planet eart a generous 3 ft2 to stand and lined bunched them all together, we would only occupy an area approximately the size of Jacksonville, Florida in area. That isn't even enough territory to consider a good infestation. Pick up your trash, don't poop upstream and we'll get along fine.
