I hate to do this but--- I enlisted in 1956 for Aviation Cadets as a pilot. The damn recruters had a navigator shortage and engaged in flim-flam to get some "innocents" to agree to early schooling then later transfer to pilot training--!!! Yeah and the IRS is, honest,[BSf] fair and here to help you---! If is not written, it does not exist, if it does not exist, it is not enforcible--> Overbore

Make sure EVERYTHING is in writing. Also if you are going for college money make sure you read what YOU need to do to qualify. They tend to "forget" to tell you that there are things you have to do to qualify beyond just enlisting.

Germany is a great duty staition, but it's not the easiest to get. There are A LOT of others wanting that place too. So he might have to wait to sign up to be able to get that posting unless there is an opening.

You should also look at his line scores, there are a lot of things that the Army uses those for too.

I think he's hoping that 5 years of taking the language will pay off someday ;)

You mean the GT/CL/CO, etc? Can you tell me what those mean?

Those score over 120 means your son is borderline Gifted/Genius. Mine are also just as high, It was the main reason that it took me so long to get removed from stop-loss status so I could finaly ETS. As for the ASVAB abbreviations and what they mean, go to About.com. They have the best synopsis for the entire ASVAB test.

I had two years of German in HS and two years of German in college, and have a wife from Germany. The Army sent me to KOREA! They don't give a crap about what is logical.

I tried to get Germany for years. My first re-enlistment I was supposed to go to Belgium....did I get Belgium after the ink was dry? Nope.

Tell your son not to hold his breath. The military will do what they feel is in their best interests, regardless of what is right. I think the catch phrase used most is "NEEDS OF THE ARMY".

Spent two years in Wiesbaden ge, of course that was before they turned the lights out on at least 4 Air bases( sembach, bitberg, spangdahlem, rhine main), perhaps he should walk down to the next cubicle(AF!)
I think Ramstien is still flourishing, its near kaiserslautern and the big army regional hospital (landstuhl)

I spent 7 years as a Navy hospital corpsman and over 4 years of that I was stationed with the USMC. I enjoyed it went to lots of places and did lots of things. To me the culture shock of getting out was much worse than the culture shock of going in. Definently get everything in writing.

HI specialist! Tell him that if he really wants to make the money in this field, he needs to start asking to be a Warrant Officer in this field. He will most likely be put into a MIT team. As a warrant, he will be more marketable and he will like being a warrant in this field. I just come back from my Warrant Officer Staff Course and sat next to a 35A. He pretty much has the pick of missions.

Does he need to take college courses to become a Warrant Officer or is it just additional Army training courses? Forgive my ignorance. I never thought this is what he would be doing but I can see him doing this field.

He is going to start running more, not that PT will be a problem for him he's played football, rugby and wrestling all through high school.

What else should he being doing that will help him in basic? He knows how to shoot quite well, better shot than myself. How far do they break down a M-16 in basic? Does he need to know how to completely break down the upper and lower or is it just basic break down of the weapon; seperate receivers, pull charging handle and bolt, clean and lube bolt/carrier...

Some MOS Fields in the Warrant Officer ranks require an associate's degree and time in grade as an NCO. What he also will need is what is known as a feeder MOS as enlisted to become a WO in his chosen field. The following link goes into greater detail on what is required to become a warrant officer.http://www.goarmy.com/about/warrant-officer.jsp

Thank you we will look into this further and see what is required beyond this:

Looks like there is a couple requirements he doesn't meet at the moment.

Can the (Flight Aptitude Selection Test) FAST be taken here or does he need to be enlisted? I'm not sending him to Alabama to pass the Class 1A Flight Physical Examination, I'm guessing you gotta be enlisted to obtain this examination.

    REQUIREMENTS

Do you have what it takes to become a Warrant Officer? Applicants for the Warrant Officer Candidate School/Warrant Officer Flight Training program must:

    * Have a high school diploma.
    * Be at least 18 years of age at the time of Regular Army enlistment and not have passed your 33rd birthday when the board convenes. High school seniors may also apply. If you are 33 — 34 years of age, you may request a waiver.
    * Be a citizen of the United States.
    * Score 90 or higher on the revised Flight Aptitude Selection Test (FAST). FAST test results are valid indefinitely as long as verifiable official records exist. No waivers are available for failure to meet the minimum FAST score.
    * Earn a minimum of 110 General Technical (GT) score on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) (nonwaivable as well). The GT score is one component of the ASVAB results.
    * Meet the Active Duty Army's screening height and weight standards.
    * Take a complete physical exam at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and meet entry medical fitness standards as determined by military medical authorities no more than eighteen months prior to the date of application. Must also undergo a Class 1A Flight Physical Examination in addition to the one conducted at the MEPS and have results approved by Flight Surgeons at Fort Rucker, Alabama, prior to the selection board. The Flight Physical must also be less than 18 months old.
