The TRUTH is, @Motomom34 that NO ONE actually KNOWS, for CERTAIN, what and EMP Explosion would really do, for a variety of Reasons.
    1. There hasn't been ANY Empirical Data, collected on Air Blast Detonations of Nuclear Weapons, since the Above Ground Test Ban Treat was signed back in the 60's or 70's.
    2. What little Data that is available, came from very limited Input Data, because the Data, collected, wasn't specifically looking for this effect.
    3. ANY subsequent Data on EMP Effects, are from Computer Simulations, derived from Modeling Software, that was designed around the very Limited Empirical Data, that is already known. That software was designed on information that is mostly WAG (Wild Assed Guesses) of what the designers "Think" the Empirical Data suggests, and there is NO WAY to validate the Modeling Software, in Real Life, due to the Treaty.
    4. SO, the .MIL & .GOV has spent Billions (with a BIG B) on hardening THEIR Hardware, for what they "THINK" might be the Case, should someone detonate such a Device, over US Territory. HOWEVER, They can NOT KNOW, or even begin To Predict, the actual EMP Effects, because they do NOT KNOW, Where, How High, How Big, and How Close, to each of their Hardened Hardware, the detonation will be.
So everything is based on Modeling, written, and based on WAGs, that can't be Verified, and with the Detonation Variables, being UNKNOWN, because they haven't Happened, YET.... Your "Wild Ass Guess" is about as Valid, as ANYONE Else's, WAG. in determining if any single Item will be Destroyed, or still Function, AFTER such an Event.

I completely disagree with your assertions for the following reasons:

    1. Math

You see, there are many tests being carried out, some by the United States government underground, others by nations also with nuclear capabilities. It doesn't have to be airborne to allow for EMP to be measured. I would check into how far China has come with not just nuke deployment, but actual EMP weaponry absent the nuclear bit. There's no guessing even needed -it's been tested, and recently. Also, an EMP blast is not some mysterious and elusive dragon, it's quite natural and can be quantified. Even our own sun emits massive radiation and can fry circuitry with EMP if it is powerful enough or hits Earth when it is weakened and recovering from a solar storm.

They do have a lot data based on Solar Flares, The Carrington event, Radio disruptions due to CME's....
Canada's Grid was knocked out by a Meteor, also and example of a EMP.
    We might want to consider also, that their WAG's have been pretty accurate! Just a few Examples;
    1) They got the bomb to work in the first place and can pretty much send it right in your living room, and land it in your Lazy Boy.
    2) They have sent more than one Satellite, out into space, where they slingshot around one planet, then to another and another.......
3)They have successfully landed on, and, are currently driving all over Mars.
    4) Satellites are circling all around the planet, doing only God knows what!
    5) ............................
This list could go on for a while. Even if we have little faith in the Big Brother, we do have to give credit that he knows his Math!

A Nuclear EMP is a completely different "Animal" than a Solar Flare initiated Carrington Effect. They MAY cause some similar outcomes, but their avenues of Propagation, are Totally Different.... All "Scientists" are NOT Created Equal, or even in the same "BallPark". I HATE the term "Scientist" for the simple reason is that it doesn't SAY ANYTHING about the expertise of the Individuals being QUOTED by the "Talking Heads" who are using the Term, and parroting Information that they do NOT Understand. Many times, the actual Individual "Scientist" in question, is talking about things that are NOT even in his Field of Study. Yet the "Talking Heads" will make them out to be the Worlds Single Source for Information, on the subject at hand. The folks that publish Peer Reviewed Papers, on EMP, do so mostly in Classified Journals that are NOT available to the General Public. When I was a FED, I had access to some of these Journals, and did my own Research into what was the "State of the Art" thinking, back in that Day, on the EMP Question, and EMP Hardening of .MIL and .GOV Hardware. Operation of such Equipment, in the FEMA Region X Bunker, a 1/2 mile from my Home, at the time, was part of my JOB. Now that I have left that Job, and move to a place where I do NOT have to worry much about either of those "Effects", Life is much better, and my Stress Levels, are greatly reduced.

Folks, saying that you've been hit with an EMP is very much akin to saying you've been sick. Without knowing a lot more, both statements are essentially meaningless. (Obvious, in the case of "sick" but less so with EMP.)

Without descriptive information, size (energy) of the pulse, wavelengths, source, etc., there's no way to forecast the effects of a hit. Worth the observation, maybe, is that the underground bunker might shrug off a direct hit, but then you have to wonder who will be left outside that they can communicate with, making the assumption that the hit disabled all other points of electronic contact? (That's pretty much the reason I do not GAS over EMP.)

Hearing: Electric Grid Vulnerable to EMP | Washington Free Beacon

Hearing: Electric Grid Vulnerable to EMP
Witness: Could kill 9 in 10 Americans
    [IMG]
Experts on Capitol Hill Thursday warned that an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack aimed at the nation’s electrical grid could leave the majority of Americans dead.

The hearing, “Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP): Threat to Critical Infrastructure,” before the House Homeland Security Committee’s Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Security Technologies explored the effects an EMP would have.

“Some would say it’s low probability, but the damage that could be caused in the event of an EMP attack, both by the sun, a solar event, or a man-made attack, would be catastrophic,” said Rep. Michael McCaul (R., Texas). “We talk a lot about a nuclear bomb in Manhattan, and cybersecurity threat to the power grid in the Northeast, and all of these things would actually probably pale in comparison to the devastation that an EMP attack could perpetrate on Americans.”

Rep. Trent Franks (R., Ariz.), who has worked to raise awareness on the issue for years, testified during the first panel that “catastrophic civilian casualties” could result unless Congress acts.

An overload of radio waves to electric systems, an EMP could result from a natural disaster, such as a solar storm, or a terrorist attack. Franks said “every single facet of modern human life” would be “crippled” by such an event.

“It strikes at my very core when I think of the men, women, and children in cities and rural towns across America with a possibility of no access to food, water, or transportation,” he said. “In a matter of weeks or months at most, a worst-case scenario could bring devastation beyond imagination.”

Franks told the Washington Free Beacon that while the nation’s critical defense assets, including nuclear defense capabilities, are currently protected against an EMP, the civilian grid is “almost entirely vulnerable.”

“The civilian grid, in my judgment, is very vulnerable,” he said. “Some of the largest transformers, the very largest ones, have an inherent resistance to all but the more intense electromagnetic pulses. But the fact is, we have enough of those mid-range transformers where a major event would be catastrophic.”

To protect the civilian grid against an EMP event, Franks has introduced H.R. 3410, the Critical Infrastructure Protection Act, which would enable the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to implement practical steps to protect the electric grid.

Dr. Michael J. Frankel, a senior scientist at Pennsylvania State University, said Franks’ bill is a “necessary first step” for the defense of the electric grid. The bill currently has 19 cosponsors.

The issue is an urgent one, said Dr. Peter Pry, a member of the Congressional EMP Commission and executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, who testified that an EMP event could wipe out 90 percent of America’s population.

“Natural EMP from a geomagnetic super-storm, like the1859 Carrington Event or 1921 Railroad Storm, and nuclear EMP attack from terrorists or rogue states, as practiced by North Korea during the nuclear crisis of 2013, are both existential threats that could kill 9 of 10 Americans through starvation, disease, and societal collapse,” he said.

Subcommittee Vice Chairman Scott Perry (R., Pa.) said that America’s adversaries may already have the ability to launch an EMP attack, which could be achieved by dropping a nuclear warhead miles above the electric grid.

“Currently the nations of Russia and China have the technology to launch an EMP attack, and we have speculated that Iran and North Korea may be developing EMP weapon technology,” Perry said. “This is why we must remain vigilant in our efforts to mitigate the effects of an EMP attack.”

Franks told the Free Beacon that Americans are unaware of the devastation that would occur if the country experienced a solar storm similar to the Carrington Event. Named after British astronomer Richard Carrington, Carrington is the biggest solar storm on record, and took place in 1859.

“If a Carrington event happened now, it’s an unthinkable, almost cataclysmic event,” Franks said. “What people don’t realize, we’re so used to things we think, ‘Oh, well power goes down for a week and it usually comes back up.’ And most of the reason it does is because of a lightning storm. Well, lightning is EMP. Lightning is E2.”

“We have put a lot of hardware-based protections against lightning over our grid installations,” he continued. “Even so, we still once in a while have some extended damage for a few days. But it almost always comes back.”

“The thing that people don’t realize is it’s the length of the blackout that begins to make it dangerous,” Franks said. “Everybody thinks, ‘Oh, well we’ll go outside and we’ll build a campfire and we’ll have a nice evening at home, we’ll break out the candles, it’ll be nice.’ A couple of days like that is okay. A week like that might be okay.”

“But you start looking at two or three months, you start looking at a very dangerous and unthinkable scenario in a society that is as dependent on electric supply as we are.”

Yep, The Grid is vulnerable to EMP and Solar Flare induced Carrington Effects of Large magnitudes, but if you are Prep'ed these will NOT be big Issues for You and Yours. If the Grid did go down for a YEAR, but your Vehicle still ran, and you Generator still Generated, would you be ready to last a year? A Solar Flare induced Carrington Effect would only bring down SOME of the Grid, not ALL of the Grid, and certainly NOT your Vehicle, or your locally housed Generator. Now, lets consider Nuclear EMP. If you are right UNDER the Blast, likely your Vehicle and Generator are Toast. But the farther away, (Inverse Square Law) and better shielded your things are, there is a better likelihood that they may survive, such a Blast. If you have your Backup Generator, or even Spare AVR (Auto-Voltage Regulator) for your Genset, and a Spare Vehicle BlackBox, stored away in a Faraday Cage, (Sealed Plastic container buried 3Ft UnderGround) then you still will have Power and a Running Vehicle, when others will not. If your vehicle is Diesel Powered, All you need to worry about is getting it Started, and EMP just doesn't burn out Starter Motors or Batteries, if you are NOT right under the Blast.

Where I live (in a Fjord with 3500' Mountains on both sides, and to the North, of a Waterway only 1/2 mile wide, and laying North/South) and EMP Burst outside of 200 Miles, and not directly south of me, will go right over the Top, and not be of much consequence to us. Since I have no Grid, to worry about, a Solar Flare induced Carrington Effect will be just a fancy "Light Show" here, assuming that we have NO CLOUDS, to block the Aurora viewing. The longest wires that are NOT Underground around here are less than 100Yds in length, and not even the STRONGEST Solar Flare induced Carrington Effect that doesn't completely burn off the surface of this Rock, can induce the kind of voltage, in 100Yds of Wire, that can do ANY Damage to my Power System.
I looked long and hard to find such a place for me, and AlaskaChick, to settle, and live. It has ALL the Advantages, and few of the Issues, for these SENERIOS.

Your Milage and Situation, may vary, but that is why YOU Prep, and consider your BOL with care.

It is more than a little unnerving that the Gov. is doing studies on survival rates as low as this.I sited one of these studies last week that I saw on FOX, it wasn't this particular one, however the number is the same.
lets say for for instance that the grid went down for a month, for whatever reason, I think we could all agree it would be "CATASTROPHIC".
Even when the power was restored , it would take a long, long time to get things back to normal, if ever. It may even offer the Gov. the opportunity to do what most here believe they want in the first place which is total control of the situation! Talk about the perfect Martial Law Scenario!

That's exactly right. And the .Gov has had a long time to prepare, but they haven't made one improvement to the power grid yet. Nothing.

Let's hope a "kill-shot" doesn't happen, or anything close to one for some time to come.

If there is, with Earth's magnetosphere already weakening due to the pole reversal, any severe M class series of CME events or an X class directed toward Earth could certainly be catastrophic. One caveat even I hesitate to mention, Earth's magnetic reversals are linked with extinction events. Now, I am not going into chicken little mode here, but it's worth thinking about to give us some added perspective. We are already into this reversal about 100 years, and it could complete its shift at any time.

Please, don't take my word for it or the word of SO in the video above, but please do take the time if it interests you to read the information provided below, all official and very informative. I highly recommend watching "Super Flood" below.
