I'm pretty sure you can fire it up and listen.... you just can't broadcast... have a friend who's pretty into it... big antenna over his whole house the whole thing.... that's how he started out when he was studying.... Although for some of us... it might be hard to just listen without saying anything....
Oh I've been listening to local and worldwide traffic already. Also AM and FM too. It will pick up CB stuff as well and it is capable of broadcasting on all of those bands. I need to have my HAM guy come set me up with the right antennas for the house. That is the key. It can work with the antenna on it, just not as far as I want it to. Here's a pic that shows how small this rig is compared to a Full size 1911
Sweet..............1911............must drool............ I notice you didn't compare it to a Glock. It's smaller than I thought it would be. Let us know how the test goes.
OK, this has been posted before but it's good stuff. I just realized this guy uses this same radio! Small exceprt here on PSK comms. (Using your PC with a Radio to send test/images) Phase Key SHift http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=159327
You are really gonna love this rig. Heya Melbo, You have made a really good choice. Lets put it this way, this is like letherman of radios. It does all modes from 160 to 440. Get yourself some batteries, solar cells, some copper, and a good tuner and there is nothing you can't work. I've had QSO's with Japan steady on the .5 watt setting. I had packed mine up all watertight for Rita, and then unpacked it in the lawn with solar cells and a shorty G5RV, and worked all sorts of stations from europe to east to west coast from here in Tejas. Go to this guys page here: The KA7OEI FT-817 pages Also check out the ZM-2 Tuner from emtech : Emtech Loads up a rain gutter, worked Japan. You couldn't have picked a better radio.
Cool. Thanks. I can't wait to get it set up. I've actually been looking at picking up another as well. More later. Gotta run
hey guys well ill prob be gting this radio soon too just took my test yesterday and past so i cant wait
Been thinking about comms for post SHTF also, thanks for info and awaiting results of your testing also.
The FT-817 is a great rig and works well as a portable radio in a backpack or what have you. Take a look around at your local hamfest and you will probably find some nice 12VDC batteries to use with it. You may also want to check out HFPack for more info.
The 817 is a nice radio. I opted for the 857D because it has more power which is important on the VHF/UHF bands.
Right now, comms is a weak point for me. Soon's melbo gets around to doing a review, I'm going to have to make a decision. (Wonder if it survived all the recent moves --)
