"We've got 14 tanker cars on fire but no reports of injuries yet. State and local fire and emergency people are on the scene," said Buddy Rogers, public information officer at the Kentucky Office of Emergency Management. "There were chemicals on board," said Steve Estes, a police dispatcher in the area of the derailment near Brooks, Kentucky. "We don't yet know what kind, but there is a large fire." Estes said people were being evacuated from the area, and a stretch of Interstate 65 had been closed. A truck that dispenses fire-retardant foam was on its way to the blaze. Students at an elementary school in Bullitt County were sent to another school as a precaution, he said. The cause of the derailment was not immediately known, Rogers said. © Reuters 2007. With some of the stuff that travels by rail, that's pretty scarey. I worked for ICGRR many years ago and the policy for derailments is n "no comment". They have official press releases to handle public information and misinformation. It would shock you to know how many hazardous materials derailments are swept under the bridge.
That was my old neighborhood.... The hospital I worked at had the only decon facility in the area too, I'll bet my old buddies are seriously busy with that.
Got a challenge for ya': Does anyone here, who lives or works close by a rail line, know the cargo that's passing right by you? Some pretty wild stuff. Something to be aware of.
That type of thing, be it by rail or by truck on the roads, is the bigest reason I try to be sure to have a plan and be set up for a BO. For the 'big stuff' I would hunker down but this type of stuff can happen anywhere.
I work for the railroad as a switchman/conductor and while I don't really want to comment on the haz-mats I work with I will say homeland security asks a lot of questions, we challenge trespassers all the time, and train crews call in suspcious vehicles when ever we see them. We do expect monkey business from the rag heads but yaaa we have wind socks along the tracks for a reason.
