This may be too late for some areas, but the cool evening temperatures and light frosts have gotten me thinking it is time to start protecting my plants. I have a greenhouse but just one of those cheap plastic tunnels that offers little temperature protection, but it will have to do this year. I started wondering what the hardiness levels are for my herbs, peas, beets and chard might be and found this PDF. Thought I'd share... Some cool weather veggies can withstand a frost, or even a light snow, without suffering much, if any damage. A couple I've heard about taste BETTER, after a hard freeze! As far as protection, cold frames work well. You get some insulation from the ground, and you can add some dark painted rocks inside, that will soak up the sun during the day (assuming you get any), then release it at night. I've heard of people using gallon jugs of water, painted black.....but all it's going to take is enough of a freeze, and that jug's split open, and useless. A good rock won't do that to ya!
garlic I covered with hay--beets and spinach I have under plastic, citrus trees in post moved to the green house which has heat lamps and a heater. Satsum orange in the ground covered with blankets but don't know if it will survive
