I know the old yellow Civil Defense unit, and I might have one somewhere around here, but its' calibration and sensitivity would be questionable at best.

Is there a good source of U.S. made radiation detection equipment that somebody has actually done some long-term testing on?

I'm looking for a low level Geiger counter and some dosimeters. It'll be used mostly to identify thorium mantles.

Here's a short read about them.

I have a dosimeter with a Geiger-Müller tube, it's actually really good for the price. This will detect alpha, beta, and gamma radiation, so the Thorium should be detected. This device doesn't make the clicking you hear with a Geiger counter, though. But I like it. Also, Don't think it's made in USA...like most things these days.

You can spend lots O' money getting better equipment to test your mantles, though. I'd start small, but that's just me.
