Written by Merle Haggard Why don't we liberate these United States We're the ones who need it the worst Let the rest of the world help us for a change And let's rebuild America first Our highways and bridges are falling apart Who's blessed and who has been cursed There's things to be done all over the world But let's rebuild America first ---- Instrumental Interlude ---- Who's on the hill and who's watching the valley Who's in charge of it all God bless the Army and God bless our liberty Dadgum the rest of it all Yeah, men in position but backing away Freedom is stuck in reverse Let's get out of Iraq and get back on the track And let's rebuild America first ---- Instrumental Interlude ---- Why don't we liberate these United States We're the ones who need it the most You think I'm blowing smoke Boys it ain't no joke I make twenty trips a year from coast to coast Video here: http://www.merlehaggard.com /
I don't see a big backlash coming for the Hag. It's all about presentation, he didn't say it in a personal attack.
Actually, Tracy and I were talking about this yesterday...before I ever saw this song.. About what happens in our country... Interesting...
I think a lot of it may also have to do with it being stated in a song released mostly to the US as opposed to being stated as we're ashamed to be from the same place as the folks doing this and stating it to a foriegn audience who are already trying to bash us. One is more along the lines of disagreeing while the other tends to strike a bit more of a sensation of betrayal, or at least thats the way I see it. Kind of like if an aquantance or friend dont like what you are doing the difference between if they come to you and discuss it with you as opposed to talking trash about you all over town over it.
Merle used his right, and is speaking the truth. And put in a song, some of the best music ever was anti war songs. He doesn’t disgrace the USA by going on TV during war time saying I hate Bush or the Office of President of the United States. I hope nobody agrees with someone in charge 100% I too would like to see us out of Iraq, just not over night, it would blow up right here in your back yard…….. Why would I want to boycott him?
I can't boycott what I wouldn't have bought anyway. I bought "Big City" way back when and have had no desire to buy more. I never would've bought anything from the Dixie Chicks even if they'd of kept their mouth shut. Just copy QS's post for the rest.
I think anyone should be able to say what ever they dadgum please. Especially about our Gov and it's leaders. If it hurts their bank accounts... They prolly made a mistake I guess that's why I love what this country was founded on. The ability to speak our minds and keep the rulers honest...?
By all means they have the right to say it, I just figure others have the right to not like it or continue to do business with them. Just a basic deal of supporting those who hold similar ideas even while allowing those who disagree to say so. There will be plenty who will agree with them and flock to them on most stands they may want to take so it all balances out in the end.
Ah, yes, voting with your wallet. Time honored way of upholding opinions without opening a cake hole. A GOOD way to do business, and a very firm, clear, and positive reinforcement of opinion. Glad you're back, MM.
