Lake Baikal, in Russia, has a surface area of 12,248 square miles. It has 20% of the world's fresh surface water. 12,248 square miles is 7,838,720 acres. Which means that lake Baikal is precisely 640 times the size of the Tillamook burn (assuming Tillamook was, as has been put forth, 355,000 acres.) 640 acres in a square mile. Anyone else feel a chill? At any rate, It's a big fire. But it's not disproportionate to the size of the Russian landmass.
According to and update from the Global Fire Monitoring Center on Aug 11, there are 15,118,805 hectares that have burnt in the Russian Federation this year. That number is 58,374 square miles. The state of Georgia has an area of 59,425 square miles. Oregon is 98,381 square miles in area. Just a frame of reference for you.
