I picked up a bunch of these blanks from a guy who had them made but never finished them up...
    Water cut, 1/4", 1095 steel...
I think it has lots of possibilites... head's not really heavy enough to swing unless I forge weld some mass on to it... I may try that...

Kind of a cool project or projects when I get the time... easy enough to heat treat the way I want it...

Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?.... that battery is an AA size....

Since you got a bunch of them, instead of trying to forge weight onto them would it be possible for you to forge 2 or 3 of them together??

hmm, looks like an interesting project. How many is a "bunch" if I may ask? What I thought of first was just putting an edge on, putting grips on and having compact hatchet tool for the BOB.

That's an idea.... was thinking of forge welding mild steel to just the head for weight there and saving the rest for the high carbon core...
Great ideas... keep them coming... Thanks..

I picked up all he had left... so about 25-30.... I'm a raw material hog when it comes to things I like or think I can use now or later....[rofllmao]

That was the original idea that I had...
Here's a pic of a finished one by the the guy I picked them up from... its very nice... and he does great work....
I'll do a few like this with different handles and sheaths.... just to see how I like it... then I wanna do a few with my own modifications just for fun...

I think the one you posted the pic of looks great.

I envision a micarta handle looking good or some stag with brass rivets.

Whichever, I like the fact that they are in 1095. I have seen similar ones. I think they would make a good pack ax for a short trip put where a fire might be in order. I can see me foraging with one.

Be sure to post pics (and prices) [beer]

ETA: I dunno if it's the flash or not, but if that sample is blued.... I really dig it.

Yup.. some different handle material would really dress this up or make it super functional.... I've got some ideas on that.... even a safety orange g10 textured handle with a safety orange kydex sheath.... make this pretty hard to lose in the bush or forget at the campsite.... Lots of possibilities... hadn't thought of stag... but that would be really classy... thanks for the ideas and interest....

Yes that's blued in the pic... really nice with that finish...
I don't have hot blue capabilites... but I may experiment with a deep cold blue....

I agree a nice stag handle with brass pins would look great and the axe would make a nice little pack axe.

I bet it would be good for splitting wood using a baton and make great feather sticks.

Bear, You really should set up a shop so you can make some these things you always talk about :p

    fortunateson I hate Illinois Nazis!

What is the handle material he used?

Have you tried Oxpho blue from Brownell's? Pretty easy to work with. Decent results.

How about flattening the back of the head to make an impact surface? Then you can use the axe and a mallet together for some additional leverage.

Looks about the right size for splitting a deer pelvis......Maybe leave as is?

Might get more swing speed if you made the handle longer? Maybe cut a channel in some handle matterial and slip the current handle in between. Pin in place and it would be like a half tang knife?

Couple of quick thoughts....let me chew on this some.

How'bout forging two ( side by side )or back to back to create a double bit pocket hatchet nessmuk would've been proud to carry. a leather or kydex sheath with a pocket for a firesteel, whetstone or diamond sharpener, and maybe a matching bird'n' trout. Oh yeah send me a finished one I'll send you frn's in return....

Cool idea... thought about a that...
Let me finish up my hot forging area... get the anvils dressed and some other things in order and I'll fire up the induction forge and finally start making some "toys" to play with....
FRN's???..... how about a couple pre 65 coins instead... [winkthumb]

miniature all steel versions of frankish throwing axes(a la the gil hibben throwing axes, but less gay styling and more functionality)...

forge weld on a spike and hammer head, add a longer handle and or langettes and make a halberd...

i do like the idea posted(along with the link) above of trimming the handle profile a touch and making a unit that would be easily attached to a field expiedient handle in order to fashion a handy tomahawk that could normally ride nice and light in your BOB...

actully i've though about trying to make up a couple of the following myself... this application revolves around a nice 18" or so zytel or unbreakable polymere handle of some sort, including a functional hammer end with possible recepticle for even more tools or for pounding)... the application would also include a spade / shovel head that had the same hole pattern drilled in order to facilitate a unit that would be lightweight enough to be packable / hikeable and yet be a variable-headed mutli-function handtool. machete(with or without integrated saw back) blades, and many other tools could be attached... google "max ax" but i invision using the handle as the multi tool recepticle(maybe with quick simple and easy wingnuts or other quick change fsteners, to fasten the differing heads into the handle), as opposed to the axhead being the recepticle attached to a handle making the whole thing unwieldly and heavy and impracticle as anything other than a hefty and poorly ballanced halfassed ax... my plan was to make units that were essentially a hybrid of the versitility of the max ax, and the gerber gator machete, crossed with the functionality of a cold steel two handed machete...
