I've been off grid for 40 years using vintage panels and boat batteries in the beginning. I didn't even have a charge controller , I adjusted an old automotive voltage regulator.
in the beginning I was merely trying to protect my computer due to the many brown outs an black outs and spikes that
were so common in the mountains I lived.
I made my own solar water heater as well out of copper, the first one melted down being PVC.
The more you get into it the more fun it is cheating the system..next project is drawing water from the atmosphere. I got a lot to learn here.
