Hog hunt any advice on Field dressing it?

Here in Sc catch a piglet and fatten it up on corn

 

From my last photos from the game cameras they believe there are 100+ hogs in our small state park! They believe in the country hogs out number humans.

 

Not far from me we have the Santa River Delta pre Civil War it as used for growing rice. Periodically it floods and Hwy 17 crosses it -during one flood the wild hogs had no where to go except on the raised Hwy. There were dead hogs everywhere from people hitting them. The state tries to control them and has periodic helicopter hunts to control the population they do so much damage and reproduce like rabbits.

 

Dont know how kansas dont have more. Oklahomas loaded with em. Every year the state hits the border with helicopters and thins em out.

 

We have many more feral hogs than illegals in Texas. Some are startlingly close to domestic breeds. It's not all Russian Boars, razorbacks, and piney woods rooters. I've seen a mixed bunch running around with a damned giant potbelly waddling after them on multiple occasions.

 

Who knows when to cut a boar hog? Full moon, falling moon, cold. hot ,time of day?
I know old timers knew this, I have forgotten but I know it involves the moons cycle, post up please.

 

Saw a video where guys in florida were catching wild hogs and cut every male they could and released em. Not sure the moon phase or anything though.

We did it in daylight, generally in fall. Since the boar was a traveling sire, winter breeding, spring birthing, and fall cutting might have been convenient, I dunno

 

Yall'ens had a pretty good survival rate or were these free range hogs?

Two to fifteen acre pens. I didn't get too involved as a boy. Ripping open and emptying a scrotum wasn't in my desired experiences.

I saw it a couple of times. Seemed like about 5 terrifying seconds in the hands of an old man.

 

OP here what is the best way to lure them in on? They should be mostly vegetarian diet around my area.

 

We use cob corn

 

Corn, lil kids they don't care

 

If you want to be fancy, dump a few dry packs of strawberry jello in 4 gallons of corn in a 5 gallon bucket of water over night.

That's what we used in the hog traps when I had one going.

 

Question is how would you cook him?

 

Wouldn't eat that nasty azz boar, That's coyote bait.

 

Interesting you say that we were not thinking of cooking him up. Yet let's face it hard time are hard times and meat is meat how would you make that meat taste better?

Please know this is coming from someone who has never eaten one of these that I can remember! I did go to several family reunion in the Tennessee hills as a child and just at what was on the table from snake to bear was served I was told years later.

This hog is on the land of a state park and they enjoy if we find ways to make death useful Im sure you understand.

 

It's how you clean a boar hog to keep the bad taste down, I'm told you have to trim out all the bad taint stomach area.

Have had barbecue wild hog, Split it in half and put on a big smoker slow cook for hours. I try ro shoot the ones in the 100lb size

 

I wouldn't feed that to the dogs, but damned sure would kill it.

Trophy ranches would make that a super keeper.
