I walk all over the place and always have a backpack. I am a college student so no big knives or multi tool suggestions please (walk to and from). I was wondering if anyone could help make this better. This is less for wilderness, and more urban. I live in Pittsburgh[winkthumb] so no lack of fishing spots. No pics, so here's what my tins look like lol. [IMG]

Wow, looks like a great setup. If you go into the bushcraft forum and check out some of Sticks threads, he shows a video with steel wool as a great tinder. You could compress it small and feather it out to use. Jute would also work if you seperated and frayed it out into a 'nest'

I've actually had great luck with some of the commercial, chemical tinders that light under a spark even when wet. I forget the name but they used to come with the BlastMatch. edit: Wetfire Amazon.com: Ultimate Survival Technologies WetFire Tinder Tube of 8 Cubes: Sports & Outdoors

Maybe a small radio like this: Gp4 Pocket Shortwave w/ light I was quite impressed with it as a pocket urban radio and would also suggest the external reel antenna.

What about some sort of AA battery backup to charge a cell phone? Buy.com - AA Battery Powered Emergency Cell Phone Charger for LG VX 5400

You have a great kit and there really isn't much I would change. Have any of your friends shown interest in having you make them one?

You can surely add a replacement razor knife blade or two in your tins..but its hard to beat a leatherman or gerber multitool.
bic or zippo lighter? ( fire steels and flints are fun to play with( got plenty myself);. but in an urban environment it's just silly to make it more difficult than it has to be.)
Canteen cup/sierra cup or small backpacking pot

    (Walking around stuff)
    spare socks)

    decent hat/sunblock/
energy bars/candybars pouch of dry rice or beans

    +1onthe small pocket am/fm/sw recvr.and ear buds.+spare batts

survival straw or backpacking water filter?

    fortunateson I hate Illinois Nazis!

Tarp or tube tent to keep the rain off.

A bit of food such as tuna in a foil packet or small can.

    GI can opener.

quarters can be used for bus fare, fastfood (if no other money), coffee at school (machines), etc.

That radio is pretty cool, I'd get it, but I already have a cheapo one. :/

I thought about a tube tent and didn't put in in to save space, but am rethinking it because I got caught in a nice storm once lol.

Tango, Iam a college student so I can't have big knives, I do have that small sd (i think) swiss army knife because its so small I won't be bothered If seen for whatever reason.

Firesteels are just extra incase for whatever reason I lose other firestarting equiptment. Small ones dont take a lot of space.

Everythiing else tango mentioned is added. It will change for winter...

As far as food I do carry 2 cliff bars. I just ment the kit itself, not counting food because what I carry may not last long in a SHTF situation...This will hopefully tide me over till I can get home to my real gear.

Cell phone charger and wet tinder look great lol. And no, my friends havn't shown interest in me making one for them. I keep multiple ones around places I frequent (Dorm, Home, Pack, etc.

The smallest Victorinox Swiss Army Knives are also about the same size as USB Flash drives. I have about 9 Flash drives in one pocket of my soft sided Maxpedition briefcase and the knife must blend in well with them for the TSA...

Tie a decent sized master padlock to one corner of one of your bandannas tie a knot to hang on to in the opposite corner makes a heck of a concealed striking weapon...

Melbo, being a student I always have a USB in my bag. I forgot to put that on here lol. It contains my name, phone number, allergie, list of medication I'm on (mostly just tylonal when I got a headache and asthma med., Anything Iam missing on that?

"In case of emergency, please contact ---"

Dunno if EMTS carry laptops that can read a USB, but I do know that a piece of paper with meds, etc. will be preferred from a time to treatment standpoint.

I have reason to know that one line will save a LOT of hassle. On paper in the bag and on the USB(s).

For who to contact in an emergency, one of the first places EMTs and first responders will check is your cell phone. Most are trained to check first for a listing under 'ICE' for In Case of Emergency.

Interesting. I carry a Jumbo Versipack. They're not really all that "jumbo", but that's ok, they've got lots of pockets. I do carry a mult-tool and it won't fit in a tin. That's ok too...there are other ways to secure small items.

Well I still see payphones every so often, but the money can be used for bus fare as well. Also college campuses sell pencils and pens, etc. incase I forget mine lol. Quarters spend the same as dollar bills, and can be a little versatile for machines that only use a coin slot.

You mentioned an emergency poncho. I'd change that to a real poncho that would withstand the kind of rainstorms you could get caught in, in your area.

I added the durable poncho, however iam keeping the emergency one in the cd player pocket lol.

Forgoing arm's or blade's what about a sling. Fixed for quick easy access, can be a wicked weapon, don't look threatening and in an urban area could come in handy. Slinging.org - Welcome to Slinging.org!

Yup...I have few slings...nasty weapon at short range...could kill a human easily!
