I know a few guys who are looking for that "Ultimate" SHTF knife.

    If $$ didn't matter, what's the one you'd want?
Or can it be found for a reasonable price?

Custom made set where you get the 2 knives in one sheath. Have the big Bowie knife a good 12" OAL and a smaller skinner with a good handle and say a 3-4" blade or a bit smaller. That way have the smal one for delicate work and some small jobs and have the big one for if you need to chop down a tree, butcher a big critter or do anything else where a larger heavier knife is called for. Have them made of say leaf spring steel (3130 IIRC) or O1 like from an old file, have a good leather sheath that holds the small one on the front of the large one.

MOST of the time, if I was limited to one blade, I'd take a 3/4 axe. Not too useful for splinters, but when the splinter infected, amputation is quick and easy.

Kidding aside, I would go with nothing larger than a 4" blade, fixed or folder, and the axe. No, it isn't just one, but two is better all around.

why do I have to do this? Cost? bulk-wt?

For SHTF, I'd many times rather have an SOG Multitool, a Skatchet, wiresaw, hand chain saw, and straight razor than any Rambo knife. There's a version of an axe-head, sold by Hood, IIRC, which weighs very little. You add wt with a stone, arrange your own handle. The pros (butchers) know to use Old Hichory butcher knives, $10 each, and just keep them touched up with steel and stone. So for no more cost, no more wt, very little more bulk, you can have tools that are many times more capable than the Bowie.

SHTF, the woods will be full of desperate, depraved riflemen. Chopping is too noisy. It's also very dangerous. I'll take the hand chain saw, if I want to cut a lot of wood. however, there's no realistic reason to do so. If SHTF, get OUT of cold country. It's much easier, safer. melting-breaking ice sucks, and so does slipping on ice, leaving tracks for enemies, sending up smoke signals for enemies, leaving "sign' where you've cut wood, having to cut and haul that wood, short growing season, fish under ice, (almost dormant in feeding) animals hibernating, migrated, etc. You can HAVE cold country, if SHTF. The cold is a LOT more likely to kill you than the other threats. One gash with that axe, one slip and a broken leg, and you are as good as dead.

Wrong anwser, worked profesionaly as a butcher and we used the rubber handled ones.

So where you headed, Equidor? In the US you tend to get winter even if its more mild and short lived and will need heat at times not to mention cooking, or do you plan to carry enouph propane bottles to run a camp stove or just eat everything raw and deal with the parisites and such likely to be contracted through this practice?

I'm not much on "the perfect knife" or "only one knife" threads because there is no perfect knife for everything and I'll never be stuck with just one. Hopefully I'll always have folders for portability, big fixed blades for strength, multi-tools for versatility and Case knives because I love 'em!
