"If men of wisdom and knowledge, of moderation and temperance, of patience, fortitude and perseverance, of sobriety and true republican simplicity of manners, of zeal for the honour of the Supreme Being and the welfare of the commonwealth; if men possessed of these other excellent qualities are chosen to fill the seats of government, we may expect that our affairs will rest on a solid and permanent foundation."

--Samuel Adams, letter to Elbridge Gerry, November 27, 1780

    But here is my caution:

If weak men, metro-sexuals and girly men of low moral standards, with a lack of wisdom and knowledge, immoderate in their spending, words and ambition, with a penchant for obviscation and self promotion, who are lacking in integrity and honor with no Fear of Of The Creator Who gave us all we have, are allowed to govern for more than two terms in all posts of government, we must expect that our state and national affairs and governments are houses built on shifting sand with a major storm in the offing. When that storm visits its long overdue wrath upon us, those and all houses so built will fall as will the form of government that was for so long abused for personal gain.
