Just applied for "Jackboot".. Update... Got the Job :)

(updated Feb 15th.. got the job)

Well, I had hoped to get away from the LEO/Security stuff when I relocated a couple months ago, but the sad fact is that it's the best job around here that I'm qualified for as far as pay/benefits are concerned. And I'm starting to run out of money.

(sigh).... So I put in my app today for a Corrections Officer position that just opened up at a nearby prison.

I've done this kind of work before, and it usually ends up in me being depressed and even more cynical about the human race than I already am (if that's possible), but I don't seem to have a lot of options now. So I'm gonna try to keep focused on the positive aspects (If I get the job obviously), like decent pay, good benefits, retirement plan, bla bla. And I figure if tshtf, surely the badge is worth something?

Good luck Blackjack. I can imagine how hard it would be to not become cynical in that job. LEO's of all branches tend to suffer from depression much more than the general public. Just come here at the end of the day and check in. I can usually find something here to give me a chuckle or lift my spirits. And I have on occasion spewed coffee all over my keyboard!!

+1 goodluck...very tough job I couldn't do. It would be rough dealing with miscreants day in, day out, of course at least they're up front about who's who. Elsewhere the snakes all wear suits.

I would't classify this position as a "jackboot" position at all. It is a necessary LEO position that is much harder than working a beat.

Jackboots = BATF & FBI & DEA all the various SWAT teams that have proliferated across the country -- especially when they exercise their powers at the cost of trampling citizens' rights.

Well, I don't really consider it a Jackboot position (a little tongue in cheek there). But it's definitely workin "for the man".

I pretty much agree with your definition Clyde, Corrections doesn't have the opportunity to stomp on average citizen rights, just inmates rights.

Scheduled me for an interview for Feb 7, so one step closer.

I neeeeed to quit smoking by then as it's a non-smoking facility.

You know, the more I think about it, it's a pretty good job considering all the benefits. I would think that corrections would be a very stable job even in a SHTF situation. You can't just quit guarding prisoners.... can you?

Strikes me as funny while I ramble on about this, I know nobody is really interested in "what's going on in Blackjacks life today" :)
But since I have no friends to talk to, you guys are forced to hear it. ;)

Hey, Blackjack, I just got off the phone with my son. He is starting the Sheriffs Academy on Monday to be a detention officer.

Pay is OK, benefits are good, and like you say, job security is pretty much assured. There will always be MZB's......

Hi BlackJack -- even though I'm new here and don't really know anyone, it's still a great place to run ideas past others. Believe me - I'm pulling for you and I think everyone else is too.

Hope you can find some like-minded people where you live, but helping others via this forum like you do has tons of merit that should never be dissed.

Today I'm home with my daughter because she has a nasty cough; we'll say a quick prayer for you!

Believe it or not, we do care to hear what's going on in member's lives, especially when they are doing something about their own situation. We can cheer the doers on and offer hints. Those that are stuck will get suggestions. Those that whine, we shy away from, more because we don't know what to say than for lack of sympathy. Ramble on, bub, we're behind you. Good luck on the interview. (They did stop guarding prisoners in NO, so we are told --)

Brother There is no problem working for the man. You get all kinds of info inside info. Some good some bad.

Corrections...man thats a tough way to go. You are locked in there just like they are only you get to go home after your 8 or 12. Be safe and watch your back. Most in the joint know if they even touch you they get the beating of their lives. Sorry but thats the truth.
