They both have their strong and weak points. "Lights Out" seems to fail to deal with any amount of sick or disease ridden masses. It's characters and all of their family are in top-notch health. I'm not saying that that is impossible, but how many diabetics do you know? How many people on high blood pressure medication or statins? Blood thinners? Heart Bypasses? Ad infinitum.

We should all be thinking about our medical needs and the needs of our loved ones. I can order about six months of all of my prescription meds, so that is usually close to what I have on hand. You can bet your ass though, if I felt like things were going to get really bad, I would be making a stop by the pharmacy to pick up more of the essentials, before the panic set it and they were all gone. That is a big advantage about people with our mindset, we are thinking ahead, the real "progressive thinkers." Pray for the best, prepare for the worst. As much as we talk about bug-out-bags, we don't talk about putting must-have prescription drugs in them. While Crohn's Disease may not kill me, if I go long enough without my meds I will wish I was dead, or at least become so dehydrated that it does me in.

In "One Second After", the local populace seem to lack any ability to gang together to solve problems, and don't until they are far too affected by what's going on to make too much of a difference.

After reading both, and discussing them with my co-workers whom also read both of them, we came to a few conclusions.

The main difference between "Lights out" and "One Second After" is about who is in charge. In "lights Out", most of the characters exibit an ability to take care of themselves. They rally the community and work on their strengths to overcome obstacles. In "One Second After", the characters (although somewhat solitary) are dependent on their local government to see them through.

While I have not read "One Second After", I could see where people from my home area, SWTX would be more able to take care of themselves than say people in a college campus in Co. First off, the SWTX area is one of the country's hunting mecca's, the "Golden Triangle" that produces an extreme amount of wildlife in part due to the optimum growing conditions for crops. Co. has some rough winters that would kill a lot of people without electricity to keep them warm. The one problem with our area is the lack of rainfall. Most of this area of Texas with the exception of S.A. is very rural. Lots of ranches and farms, and with the extended growing season it is named the "Winter Garden". Rural people are typically more able to adapt to harsh conditions, and more prepared. We always had a freezer full of venison and beef, and a closet full of guns and ammo. It was just the way we lived/live. Our neighbors were the same way.

Although "Karate Man" may have not been a perfect leader, he was effective. His charisma carried him through his mistakes. On the other hand, Jim was a vetern, hardend (although not what he thought) through his experiences. Through his reputation alone, he was able to work his way into the local government whereas the average "joe sixpack" would have gotten thrown out or worse.

"Lights Out" takes place in a rural setting in Texas, where the growing season starts early and ends long. The location for "One Second After" is in a small college town surrounded by mountains, lacking any decent sized farms.

In "Lights Out", Karate Man gets a sizeable catch in gold and silver to help him to gain what he needs in order to survive. "One Second After" main character has his position at the college, and his wealthy in-laws to provide certain needed items.

So it comes down to a few items; who you know, where you are, and how much you start out with. Pretty much like everything else.

In any SHTF, the authorities will have their hands full with the urbanites who have no clue how to get by without the "necessities" ie: electricity, running water, cable tv, latte's, etc.

Many thanks for the a magnetically great read. I couldn't stop once I found it. Writing any composition is a lonely, time consuming job that can only be explained as being a labor of love often inspired by something beyond our conscious selves. I can only say HalfFast had to have been driven by a need to express a "possible future history" view by putting it in story form. Publish it; send it to a movie guy like John Milius, but 'bro you need to make some coin from this work.
