Had to ask the owner of two dogs that came visiting today if he knew his dogs could be shot on sight for attacking livestock.

Right now I've got 2 rabbits missing patches of fur, one missing a tail (her new name is stubby) and a dead chicken.

Youngest thought I was being a bit harsh advising the owner .. that was until she found the dead chicken.

If'n they come back, I'll send the owner the collars and tags.

I believe sending the ID (collars) is appropriate to the next of kin. Eye for an eye is correct in my book....

Once upon a time when I had sheep and goats, a round-the-way neighbor liked to leave his red heeler loose at all times. It liked to come to my place at night and kill baby goats. The cops were useless. I asked nicely first, then not so nicely, then told them I could legally shoot the sob. I was told that if anything happened to the dog, they'd fill every stock tank I had with antifreeze and then I wouldn't have any goats left to worry about.

Suddenly I saw the wisdom in shoot, shovel, and shut up.

Yep, the Three "S" 's. Deer hunters have trouble with loose dogs as well.

If the neighbour's dog unaccountably can't find it's MIA master....I'll have a fair idea what fate was met. ;)

@ditch witch , if I am not mistaken, the threat to poison your livestock is in an of itself a crime. I would file a report with the cops. Then shoot the dog as needed. The threat clearly shows intent if anything does happen after the dog suffers lead poisoning.

It would be your word against the neighbor, who would no doubt feign shock and deny having ever said something so psychotic. YMMV but my personal experience with cops in livestock/dog matters has not left me with any lingering desire to involve them.

THAT is a very good thought! Even 3-6' under, that might register at ground level,(though, they would have to have a hand scanner, and be right on top of it.) At present, they have a range of only a few feet, and that is with no dirt between, but it may not be true later on. I expect scanners to have much longer ranges, if obunmer gets people chipped, through obummercare.

A solution might be to bury the dog in its own individual Farraday cage....or... slice and dice the mongrel and feed it to the miscreant neighbour's hogs. There's a nice circularity in that solution.

Or just deliver the chipped dog's head on a pike at the property line. Dogs can not run free here, it is the responsibility of the owner to maintain control of his dog, and he is responsible for any damage done by his dog. Log the threat with the cops, follow through with the dog removal if nessisary, and file charges in court if anything follows. Document everything. Record him if possible.

I do so like the Fargo solution. Goodness.....I'm sounding more and more like K.G. (TUS thread)

Sounds like it'd make mighty fine blood and bone fertiliser too.

Nah, you guys are over-thinking this. Just grab some gasoline, dig a pit, throw the dog in, light it up, maybe toss in a little thermite if you are feeling happy. After it's a melted pile of goo, bury it. The chip will most likely melt. Then, grab a beer.
