    Have you looked at the YAESU FTM-7250 D transmitter receiver Dual Band FM+C4FM 144/430 MHz 50W, it's quite a tidy little set and ideal for 'emergencies' Also the cost is exceptionally low for what it's capable of.

    We both put up better antennas and are now able to communicate well on the 2m band.

    I was going to say ,the antenna is half the radio . fundamentally the most important half .
    Beam antenna are significantly more effective in longer range operations .

    Directional Antennas (Beam) can give one a significant increase in Range, TRUE but only ONE Direction at a time, and not necessarily in the direction that one would need to communicate with... There are Gain Omni-Directional Antennas that will give a similar increase in Distance without scaraficing the directionality of the Antenna System.... One must understand Antenna Radiation Patterns (both Horizontally and Vertically) of each of these Antenna types, and where the extra Antenna Gain comes from, and where it is LOST from... to make a reasonable decision on what type of antenna is needed for a particular Set of circumstances...
