Picked a good gun for it. Also, the specs on how far a bullet will shoot underwater are well established.
No knowledge is gained with out the chance of things going wrong. Capt Cook was an idiot, Columbus was an idiot. The astronauts were idiots (unless you believe the nut case movie and then they never left Earth at all). If it weren't for idiots, we would be walking around naked and worried about lions and tiger and bears oh my!
The trick is surviving the aberrant idiocy and remembering what was learned. (Yes, I know Cook didn't, but he had others to do the remembering.)
