This is an old thread. I'm selling the knife below $250, Shipped. (melbo) CRC? Since I lied and said I'd send 'em today and didn't I figure I better post pics to make up for it. This one turned out pretty nice - the snakewood is concrete-like hard! Then there's the green micarta skinner - turned out pretty well also. I told Melbo I'd use mosaic pins, but not what size , so I used my new 1/8" pin material and they look great.
what's all the squiggly stuff on the blade? . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. . That is just incredible Valkman! I believe I have a new dress belt knife! Hell, for $50, I'll take 5 more
Crap, I meant to click on the skulls... I just lost a few man points there didn't I? I'll gain them back when my dudes see this knife
Thanks! Wait 'til you see the giraffe bone handled one for my neighbor - my first try with this expensive stuff and it really turned out great. That Damascus came out nice too since I remembered to etch it this time...
Wow that is amazing to me... I simply have to get you to make me a combat knife, Don. I can make the design and base it on my own experience with using combat knives. Anyway. Awesome stuff.
That Damascus is beautiful !!!! A class -A- job!! Do you heat treat it yourself? If so does it treat different than O1 ?
Thanks guys! Brokor, I could probably do that especially if we make it out of 440C or ATS-34 since then I'm not limited in blade length. In tool steels I'm limited to 5" blade since that's all I can heat treat. BigUglyOne, it heat treats the same as O1. In fact everything about is just like making a O1 knife except you etch it before putting the handle on. Once you have the look you want, make the handle, then I used a Q-Tip to apply etching solution on all he edges to make them match the blade.
Well. They arrived today. Valk takes great pics but "live" is so much better. That snakewood feels like some kind of dense composite. Hard stuff and it took a real nice 'hand rubbed' look. Wait, It prolly was hand rubbed..... Thanks Don. These are some fine knives. I may set the two OD aside and use the Snakewood....
I'm glad you got 'em! They always look better up close, that's for sure. I'm interested in how the edge holds up on the Damascus one especially. That wood is soooo hard. Oops opened it up for hard wood jokes now!
The Damascus pattern on the upper 3/4 of the blade is "standing out" and the 3/8" towards the edge is smooth. Is this from tempering or polishing the edge? Not a complaint, just fascinated by the process.
Ah that's because of the temper line. The bottom part is what was hardened so it doesn't take the etching as well. I thought about hardening the whole thing but function comes first and that knife should bend 90 degrees without breaking since it's got a softer spine.
Yeah, I can see the temper line in the other ones as well... Doesn't take away from the knif. I was just curious. I think I may change my name to snakewood
What was that about heartwood? (Well, you opened the door, snakeman. Or, uuhhh --supmpin like dat, ennweigh. Hard snake? Well, it IS 6 AM --)
