No amount of facts will make any one believe.

And facts require belief. Belief that the source of the fact is accurate and trustworthy. Belief that the subject is fully understood.

For example, since many of us are old farts:
Years ago all cholesterol was bad according to "science".
First we had to get total cholesterol lowered to 220 or below.
A few years later it had to be 200 or below.
Then it was 180 or below as the "scientific facts" shifted.
And then there was the revelation of "good" and "bad" cholesterol.
I can't wait to hear which cholesterol "fact" is coming next.
It could be true or perhaps it could not.
The point is that my "faith" is not what it was, so I have to be a skeptic and independently research and evaluate every thing my Doctor tells me.

Also "facts" change. For most of my life it was a "fact" that Pluto was a planet. And then it wasn't.

So many "facts" are subject to the opinion of others it makes you wonder if any "facts" are true at all.

That reminds me of a brief exchange I heard while asking directions at a gas station in Cary, NC. I asked the group of men at the check-out how far it was to Wallace, NC. One little fella piped right up. "About 90 minutes on 40."

There was a big bearded giant of a man standing behind him, and in a slow baritone voice he said, "He asked how far, not how long." Nobody said word for a long moment as the big man just shook his head. Then he told me, "It's right at a hundred miles if you take I-40, maybe ten miles more on 421."

I've never forgotten that, and try to listen to what is asked and think before I answer.

    815. I grew up in a time when the school principal had a paddle in his office and made sure every kid saw it. That was enough. We didn't tell our parents, we didn't have bad dreams about it. We just understood what it meant, and it worked.

That magic, and the fear of what Grandma would think worked wonders on most kids of my age.
