You don't live in Dixie do you?

 

Many of the older homes in Dixie didn't need ac...they were designed to have airflow through the house, often by a large window or attic fan that created a nice breeze.

 

The Hawley House in Lumberton, NC was my staging place for races in Maxton, NC. The house had no air conditioning, but when you opened the windows in the evening and flipped on the whole house ventilation system it cooled off quick. Most of the central hallway ceiling was aluminum louvers that flipped open when the massive air mover fan in the attic kicked on. The house was also surrounded by porches and shaded by trees.
It was comfortable in a Southern summer without A/C.

I have a friend who lives in a house built in the 1890's. Walls are 18" thick. He has functional shutters, dark curtains and dormer windows that open. He lets the heat out in the early evening. Traps the cool morning air maintains a comfortable temperature all day without A/C.

 

Yep,, NC . Not as far south in Dixie as you , but still southern born and bred .
