While the R75 itself wasn't directly copied before the war, the Soviet M-72 motorcycle, which became a significant military model for the Red Army, was a reverse-engineered copy of the earlier BMW R71, according to Ural Motorcycles.

Some theories suggest that the Germans may have provided the blueprints for the R71 to the Soviets during the period of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, as the R71 was an older model and the R75 was being developed.

The Soviets also covertly purchased five BMW R71 units through intermediaries in neutral Sweden, dismantled them, and reverse-engineered every detail, including the engine and gearbox design, notes Destination Cycles.
