This is true. The vast majority of it's functions could be done by private industry. It'd be a heck of a lot cheaper, faster and we'd get better service.

Aircraft usually have all safety wired fasteners. The old Continental 1790 V12 in the M60 tank would rattle every bolt and screw loose if they were not safety wired. Every fastener had the wire pulling in the direction of torque, so the fasteners could never come loose. Clean, uniform and consistent safety wire all over the engine was a thing of beauty and point of great pride for us.

We used these internally on Ingersoll rand compressors and the like keeping the torqued nuts and bolts from falling in the sump.

When seconds count the nearest legally armed citizen is hours away.
