We used to have a hobby shop in town carried models of a sorts. Used to make the balsa wood planes with the rubber band operated propeller and dope covered paper wings. Cars boats made them all. Model building I think gave me the ability to visualize how things were put together. Hobby shop is long gone sadly. Kids today have lost a lot replaced with video games and I phones SAD

I used to build a lot of models myself,, cars, tracks , tanks , military battleships...a few of the ships , when I needed to make room for more models , I would take the ships down to the creek,, put a little gas in the hull ,, put a firecracker just above the gas,, with a cigarette as a delayed fuse ,,, I think stuff like that is why they made cigarettes to burn out if your not huffing on it every 15 seconds or so,,
For just a couple of bucks ,, you could keep a kid busy for a few hours building them models .

 

My dad belonged to a model airplane club called the Buzzards. Gas engine model planes long before remote control --flew in a circle and had two wires connected to a hand control and controlled the up and down of the planes ailerons.
