The blacks that first came to Virginia in1619 were not slaves but indentured servants, as England didn't have the institution of slavery. They had been slaves in the Spanish colonies, but not in the English colonies. As indentured servants, they had to work off their contracts and were then freed, given land, tools, seed, etc. so that they could become productive members of society. Most became farmers and some bought indentured servants, both white and black. It wasn't until 1661, that the institution of chattel slavery was established in Virginia...and it was a black former indentured servant that petitioned the Viginia colonial legislature to allow him, and others, to make slaves of their black indentured servants.
