A proposal before the Texas Legislature aims to eliminate property taxes—currently a revenue source nearly equal to all state tax collections. To offset this loss, the plan would implement a broad-based consumption tax. Texas’s current state sales tax is 6.25%, with local jurisdictions allowed to add up to 2%, bringing the maximum to 8.25%. However, to fully replace property tax revenue, the statewide consumption tax would need to exceed 19%, even after removing most exemptions like food and medicine.

This shift would mean everyone pays, not just property owners. Renters, retirees, and low-income families would shoulder the same tax burden on everyday purchases. Be careful what you wish for.

A more targeted and compassionate alternative would be to end property foreclosures for Texans aged 65 and older due to delinquent taxes. The tax lien would remain, but collection would be deferred until the last original owner voluntarily leaves the home or passes away. This approach preserves local revenue while protecting seniors from losing their homes.
