I'm 75 years old and have been paying property taxes for 51 years—ever since I bought my first home for $8,000. At this point in life, I’d like to see those taxes come to an end.

Of course, I imagine the folks who just financed a million dollar home last week—and the refineries lining the Gulf Coast—would love to stop paying property taxes too.

I do appreciate knowing that when I call 911, the fire department, EMS, or sheriff’s office will eventually show up.

What I don’t appreciate is the idea of replacing property taxes with a additional 10.75% sales tax on everything I buy for the rest of my life. I currently pay about $2,800 a year in property taxes. That’s the equivalent of paying 10.75% sales tax on $26,046 worth of purchases. If I spend more than that in a year, I’d actually end up paying more under the proposed new system in Texas.

 

I'm 68 years old, and my property tax her in Alabama is reduced depending upon my income. Most people that are retired pay nothing, unless they have a lot of investment income. However, I'm still working and my income is just a little too much (like a $100) too much. I suppose I could lie, but the consequences, if caught, are too high, so I'll pay the property tax for a few more years. Remember, someone has to foot the bill for all of the services that we need (police and fire, schools, hospitals, roads, etc.) without which our property would be worth less or worthless, and regretfully that means some sort of tax.

 

Then y'all might have to start paying INCOME TAXES!

 

What do I get for my property tax ---not much. I had to pay for private schools for my 3 boys as the government schools sucked so bad. Police protection it takes them 20-30 minutes to get to this end of the county - my firearm protects myself and family. Roads are paid for by gas taxes. No property tax money goes to hospitals. So that leaves fire protection which we do have a firehouse close by (40 years never needed). I would gladly give up property tax for a flat tax on purchases --at this stage of my life I'm not buying a lot of stuff

 

that's the problem. You still get to vote but you don't have to pay for it.
ONE rate paid by all, no matter what. That's the only fair tax.

 

It varies by person. I am still paying income taxes. I started paying Social Security taxes when I was 16, almost 60 years ago and last year, I paid taxes on 85% of my social security check. I have never received a single income tax refund check nor a single dime of stimulus money (not even during covid).

 

I'm talking about STATE INCOME TAXES!

 

None that I know of.

 

Me too! I make INCOME in this STATE and ANY TAX is an income tax. My reward for being a productive member of society. The tax that galls my ass though is property tax, being charged to own something I paid tax on when I bought it, be it a car, boat, or house. I am kinda OK with INCOME TAX, because something has to pay for services and such, but then I can control how much tax I pay.
