The tutorial shows how to use a mousetrap to hook fish. I think the sudden pull when they tug at the bait gives a better chance of the hook biting in. A length of elastic would allow some give in the line and the resistance is likely to tire out the fish and avoid the line breaking. N.B. this set may not be legal in some jurisdictions, but in a SHTF survival situation, ye must do as ye must to stay alive.
Trout line upgrade. I have seen folks utilize a bent sapling or springy tree branch to do something similar.
