Still open! It's not Chicory, and it isn't Phlox. We may need a closer image if nobody guesses soon. Where is DW? :sneaky:

How about Dame's Rocket? US Wildflower - Dame's Rocket, Damask Violet, Night-scented Gilliflower, Queen's Gilliflower, Mother-of-the-evening, Summer Lilac - Hesperis matronalis Otherwise he has to drive back there, get out of the car and get a better picture of the leaves.

Didn't need to get out of the car, the road is plenty narrow. This help any? It's a bit dark, but the shape of the leaves is clear. P6222606.JPG

Well, shoot. Here I was focusing on the purple ones, which do resemble chicory. No idea what those white ones are. Butternut squash?

Those do not even look like the same flowers. Those above are in the rose family. The leaves and stems look like wild roses. I googled rose family bushes Pennsylvania and came up with these.
    Multiflora Rose (Rosa multiflora)

    I think it is a Bingo! :)

    Spoiler alert... It's asparagus.
Last year while cleaning up the wood chips around a crabapple tree I noticed an asparagus shoot so I thought I would just leave it. We have a large asparagus bed a couple of hundred yards away so I figure it was a volunteer that just escaped the plantation. This one grew to a full sized, bushy but immature plant last year. Looked a little unkempt there but interesting nonetheless. This year he is emerging as the cutest little guy ever. Like a little bonsai or something.

    Very strange.

Must have blown in off of the highway. Clearly another volunteer.

Guinness Stout or a hoppy pale ale would be the favored variety. But a good single malt Scotch- now there's an heirloom- just don't get much planting done when that's around.

That is the healthiest asparagus I have every seen. I have never seen an asparagus plant so bushy.
I know there is a plant that resembles asparagus but one variation is toxic.

Where I grew up we had asparagus wild in the ditches along side the road, along with the 'wild' cough choke hemp plants

  18. My parents farmed. Hemp was a troublesome weed, Folks said government PAID farmers to plant and raise it during the war when we were cut off from traditional sources. War effort needed lots of rope. I don't know how good the stuff grown in Iowa was for rope and burlap. Or any other uses.

I need ID help. This looks like a walnut but it has a prickly outside. Any ideas?
