I was going to say chestnut as well . Is it a tree , or bush ??

 

It is a huge tree. They look a lot like horse chestnuts. I will go get one and cut it open. Will report tomorrow

The common name "horse-chestnut" (often unhyphenated) is reported as having originated from the erroneous belief that the tree was a kind of chestnut (though in fact only distantly related), together with the observation that eating the fruit cured horses of chest complaints despite this plant being poisonous to horses.

 

My Dad told me a few years back ,,,that a disease came thru the country years ago that affected Chestnut Trees , and pretty much wiped them out , or stunted their growth to almost extinction .Not sure if this is true or not , but I'm sure my pa wouldn't have purposely told me wrong .

 

I am sure he didn't give you bad info. I know the ash trees had an issue years ago. My Uncle was just telling me that many of the fruit trees back East have a drooping illness. He said the apple crop this year isn't as good.

 

That is a chestnut, we have planted Chinese to cross with the every few that have lived thought the rot that hit in the 80-90s
