When my Lovely Bride first came here on a regular travle visa, there was zero work for her until we changed it to a marriage visa, then the velvet robes parted and Champaign rained down, suddenly there were all kinds of work available as a temp. Her wages were about $16.00 per hour and zero benefits! Once she became a U.S. citizen, all the work instantly dissipated! She had to start all over and enter the work force the way the rest of us do it. After several months and 9 intensive interviews, she was finally hired at one of the hospitals making a real salary, about the equivalent of $80.00 per hour, FOR THE EXACT SAME WORK she did before as a Non citizen! She had full benefits and a retirement and a guarantee of continual employment based on skill, merit and tenure! Normally, her specialty is so specific and highly skilled and sought after that she can name her terms, and salery, but only after becoming a citizen! Then there was the whole hassle and cost to changing visa status, going through the citizens application process and the waiting and finally the tests, not to me tipn all the traveling to San Fran to deal with the counsulate and visa, and finally the citizenship tests and swearing! All told, this cost us about $9000 with $5000 directly in the citizen application process, and a 5 year wait!
