Scince I bought this 65 acres 2 years ago I have somehow become an animal rescue. We now have 4 horses, 5 cats, and 3 dogs. Everyone a rescue animal. A few weeks ago we got a call about a friends friend that had a litter of full blooded (but unpapered) Doberman puppies and couldn't afford to keep them. They were giving them all away, even the parents. When we got to the house it was appaling. These pups were in the filthiest conditions. The parents looked like walking skeletons. It was criminal. I had thought that we might take the parents and we intended to get a female pup for my daughter. But after seeing the condition of these poor animals we couldn't leave them. We just couldn't afford to take the parents and the people who had them assured us that they had a home for them but we did take all of the pups. 4 females and one male. We found a home for two females. We brought the other 3 home. One, the runt of the litter died the next day. We got the other two into the vet and they were ate up with worms, fleas and ticks. The vet wormed them, gave them a B-12 shot and put them on anti-biotics. But it was too late for the little female. She died the next day. So that left just the male. He has been to the vet two more times and he is worm free, healthy and growing. He is a survivor. He is still on vitamins and calcium tablets. He has his first round of shots but has one more to go. We wil wait as long as possible to crop his tail and ears. Give him time to bulk up some more. His wieght has more than doubled since we got him. I did'nt want to get too attached to him until I saw if he was going to make it. But it looks like he is here to stay. So I want to introduce Kaiser ( Kai for short ). He is getting spoiled. He loves to go with Dad. He throws a fit if I am outside and he can't get to where I am at. He will ride with me in the truck everywhere I go. We have only had one "accident". He seems to learn fast. I think he will be a good one. Maybe not an Apollo the wonder dog, but I think he is going to be a keeper.
Cool! I could see becoming a defacto animal rescue home if we had the land, got a soft spot for innocent critters.beautiful newfriend you got there..good luck with him
In the same way that every woman yearns to have another child everytime we hold a newborn baby, I would have taken a few of those dobie babies home in a heartbeat. He's a beauty and definitely looks like he too will be a wonder dog. Good job MM
Nice looking pup there. And great job for stepping up and taking the other puppies, I'm sorry that that didn't make it, but I know that you gave it everything you could.
Awwww. What a cute little guy! Sounds like he's your best friend already. You have a good heart MM! It's too bad the other puppies weren't as strong.
Dobies are the best, We had two of them over the years and they are without doubt the best family dog out there. Ya did good !!!!!!
My little buddy got his ears cropped and tail docked today. He was mad at "dad" when I picked him up. He wouldn't have anything to do with me for awhile! Got him "quarantined" on the back deck for the next couple of days. I shared some steak with him so he's kind of forgiven me a little bit. The ears were great but the vet is a little worried about the tail. He was in such bad health when I got him that we have been trying to build him up before we did the surgery. He should have had the tail done weeks ago. The vet put a collar on him to keep him from licking and chewing on the tail. He doesn't like it much. And he still gets his head around and licks on his stump. I'll have to keep an eye on him or a few days. He goes back to the vet Monday to get the ears re-wrapped.
Kai is a beautiful pup. He sure is growing fast. I don't envy you the next few months of ear posting. Kind of like having a new baby that needs constant care. Nonetheless, I prefer the docked and cropped look. I could live with uncropped ears but the tail is a must - I would miss the wiggling Dobie butt that comes with the stub.
What a Cutie! He does kinda' look like the old rabbit ear receiver from the top of the tv. I can hardly wait to see him after the bandages are off!
Just an update Kaiser version 2.0 He got his bandages off for the last time today. I have been taking him in every 4 days to have his ears re-wrapped and the vet took the stitches out last time but wanted to go one more time with the tape to get them to stand up. Looks like he did a great job. BTW, he's not happy being in the back seat!! Momma was up front and wouldn't let him ride next to Dad like he's used to.
Looks like a nice long crop. You probably already know this but I help strengthen the ear muscles by "pssss-ing" just loud enough to get the pups attention. He will perk his ears straight up (and usually cock his head as well) in response. I do that several times a day and it really helps in the long run.
I actually prefer a close "military" cut on males but this vet said he only does a 3" cut. He said he has had trouble with shorter ears. So I went with his advice. This is the standard "Show cut". I do the psst too and a whistle. I had a lot of trouble even finding a vet to do the crop. The nearest large city is a upper class community. We called several vets there and they all had the same PC BS. "We DON'T do that! That's cruel, nobody does that anymore!" I only found one vet that would do it or $750!!! I went to a smaller farm town that only had two country vets and the one that did it charged me $200 and that included changing the bandages 5 times and taking out the stitches.
