A New York Democrat is working to reduce the number of Americans legally owning firearms by mandating they obtain expensive insurance.
In March, New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney boasted her proposed measure would be “the first bill to require liability insurance of gun buyers nationwide.”
H.R. 1369, the Firearm Risk Protection Act, mandates that all gun owners obtain liability insurance prior to buying a firearm.
“It shall be unlawful for a person who owns a firearm purchased on or after the effective date of this subsection not to be covered by a qualified liability insurance policy,” Maloney’s bill states.
The legislation calls for the federal government to impose a fine of $10,000 on firearms owners who do not have insurance after the bill becomes law.
The law would effectively reduce the number of legal firearms owners in the country and create a new class of criminals. Many Americans would either not choose to follow the law or would be unable to afford the required insurance and would be forced to forfeit their firearms under fear of prosecution by the federal government.
“For too long, gun victims and society at large have borne the brunt of the costs of gun violence,” Maloney said when she introduced the bill in the House. “My bill would change that by shifting some of that cost back onto those who own the weapons.”
In other words, according to the New York Democrat and the sponsors of her legislation, legal gun owners are responsible for violence committed by others. Anti-Second Amendment Democrats have adopted this irrational argument as they move to strip Americans of their firearms following the Sandy Hook massacre.
The proposed law is “ridiculous on its face, as it presumes law-abiding gun owners are guilty for merely exercising a fundamental, constitutional right,” Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, told The Daily Caller on Tuesday.

ummm, How does one get insurance that does not exist?

Wait a minute, that will come along shortly thereafter with premiums so high that most will not be able to afford it. It is a dangerous item to possess you know.

Really, so as a LEGAL gun owner and law abiding citizen, I am somehow responsible for the actions of gangbanger and thugs that do drive-by shootings and kill/injure innocents?

So, the passing of this load of crap, would make it so that in order to exercise my 2nd Amendment RIGHT i have to have insurance? By putting a restriction on a right it no longer is a right, but a privilege!

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." That is good enough for me, anything less will not be tolerated.

I'd bet the insurance doesn't cover the willful protecting of ones life or those of the residents of said household.

    Fine print.

easy answer. burn the perp in a big tire fire. Make sure they are alive because you don't want to be charged with desecration of a corpse. They'll quiet down after a minute or so. Kinda like lobsters.

The Dems are using a "logic" similar to the reasoning that got Obamacare into law. The .gov can already mandate that a citizen buy health insurance or pay a penalty. That was approved by the back-stabbing Roberts Supreme Court. So, the "barn door" is open.

Now, they are proposing a liability policy be mandatory if a person wishes to possess a firearm. It's predictable, but worrisome, that they are quickly going for de facto registration and inhibiting ownership by making it expensive in the same stroke. Whoever is pushing the "people control" buttons for these vapid Dems have done it before (ie other socialist / facist regimes), or been schooled by those who have. This will not get out of the Repub House of Representatives, but the idea of such insurance will begin to resonate within the warped low-information voting national psyche such that it may recur again at a later time.
