All a ham license is, Is proving you know how to use the radio the correct way. So as others and you can enjoy the radio and not be abused by those that act like idiots, Like the guys on channel 19 on the CB sometimes.
A ham license is not meant to take away your rights, nor meant to try and single you out if and when the SHTF.
Many things in life has to be governed or licensed so as not to endanger or intrude on others rights. That's just the way it is.
And true some licenses and governed things are just another way for the government to make more money, So its a two edged sword, It protects my rights, But it takes away yours in your eyes.
ETA: My Ham license cost me a whopping $10 for ten years.

I know, my friend. I wish it were simply just a CERTIFICATION process, but it is by every means a license and a privilege. I do not necessarily object to those using the privilege, I do not want this to be confused with my position. I see no dastardly and nefarious reasons behind HAM licensing to current date, and I commend any who use HAM under licensed authority. However, it is still a privilege and certainly not a right.

There are many idiots on CB radio. I do like the idea of regulating HAM, but I believe it would be better if it were entirely in the hands of the people and not a private corporate agency (FCC) or any other agency of Slavery, Incorporated. But, that's just me. HAM is still a great tool to use even in times of tyrannical oppression.

For what it's worth, the fee in these parts is 15 frns. Up to half that may be retained by the testing organization to offset direct expenses required to administer the tests (space rental, travel for the examiners and such like.) "Free" is close enough a description for dot gov.

I'm a new member, but just can't resist agreeing with 7/1/2014 post about FCC's tempting ulterior motives--and expressing my opinion.

With corrupt political and police state environment (in any country), FCC (or, counterpart) thugs could do SO many nefarious deeds to those on their 'to do' list.

Here's trivial example: simply destroy ham's antenna. What is anyone going to do about it? Sue someone?

    Welcome aboard @jlk!!!
It is a thought to ponder.... Though most will tell you otherwise and to get licensed and active on the air.

There have been many, that have taken personal affront to others Antennas and Feedlines, in an attempt to put them off the Air... Hams, CB'ers, GMRS'ers and others over the many years... Fortunately it is rarely the .Gov, via the FCC, That has been the culprit in such actions. Even when they had CB Hit Squads, they just dragged along a US Marshal, and confiscated the offending Equipment, and issued a Federal Summons to the owner, to appear in Federal District Court. Now days the get to issue forfeiture Letters, and give the offender 30 Days to Pay up, or show cause in Federal District Court, why they shouldn't Pay.... A $30KUS Forfeiture Letter usually gets the offender to stop his BS, and Play Nice with the other children. Never actually had to have anyone ARRESTED, in all my time with the Commission.... .......

My apologies for possibly impugning motives of FCC in a previous post.

Old cynics like myself are susceptible to belief that even honorable federal/state agencies can be exploited by other corrupt influences.

Bottom line: Current reputation of FCC is beyond reproach!

If the IRS can be co-opted for nefarious political uses.... any group can be used as a tool by the .gov to achieve their "goals". Maybe not today, but someday it is possible.... that is why we have to pay attention to what our government is doing [tf]

Oh, I wouldn't say that, Not in a HeartBeat..... They just are NOT in the business of getting folks Locked Up, or Shooting them DEAD.....
They are in the Liberal Dems Pocket, and the Enforcement Staff, is NOW, only capable of dealing with the MOST Serious Interference Cases, where Safety of Life and Property is in imminent Danger. This is simply due to ALGORE "ReInventing Government" when he was VP, and gutting the Enforcement Staff, to Bare Bones. He also closed 75% of the Monitoring Stations, around the country, while he was at it.... Then allowed the FCC, to hire a whole bunch of Lawyers, and EconoDudes, to help him SELL Bandwidth to the Highest Bidder.....
